ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired defenseman Francois Beauchemin from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for right wing Joffrey Lupul and defenseman Jake Gardiner.
“We are thrilled to be able to reacquire Francois,” said Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “He is a physical, puck-moving defenseman with tremendous character. We would also like to wish Joffrey Lupul well in Toronto. He’s worked very hard to return from a serious ailment and we hope he can get his career back on track.”

Pretty good, I have to say. Gardiner is a talented prospect, and I’m interested to see which Lupul we will get. Good luck to the both of them here!

This deal was really about Beauchemin for Gardiner and a pick (which by itself is a pretty good deal for Toronto if Gardiner pans out).
Lupul ... well, there’s a reason he’s already been traded four times in his career, and his fat cap hit ($4+ million) is on the books through next year. Maybe he gets it together in Toronto, but from Anaheim’s perspective, it seems taking Lupul’s contract is the price Toronto had to pay to get their hands on a top prospect.

Beauchemin’s always looked lost playing for any other team but Anaheim. Maybe he’ll be able to get back on track.
