An Earlier UFA Day?

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,

One way or another, the date for the start of free agency will almost certainly be moved by the NHL away from July 1. What will likely happen in the near future is that the “interview period,” which appears to have taken any of the intrigue out of free agency and shows that GMs can’t have nice things, will be tied to the date of the draft and significantly reduced.

Amen to that. Who wants to spend Canada’s birthday in front of a television or computer monitor waiting to hear what players have signed contracts while their non-hockey-loving friends are enjoying the most pleasant holiday of the year? (And who wants to spend the entire day stuck inside writing about it? Amirite?)

It’s pretty clear the situation needs at least some tweaks. This year’s free-agent courting period began June 23, which gave GMs and prospective free agents eight days to cook up deals, and that’s exactly what they did.

It seems like the Canadian media is really complaining hard about this because they don’t want to work on Independence Day.  I would take a guess that the fine employees of Tim Hortons, Burger King, and just about every other franchise also would prefer not to work on the holiday, but it is part of the job.

What I actually found fun was back in 2012 when UFA day was July 4.  I was hanging out with friends and we had a stream going while we were grilling.  It was a blast being able to talk hockey IN PERSON while big news was happening (that was the summer Parise and Suter).

1) What makes you think the Canadian media doesn’t want to work on Independence Day? Newsflash: Canadians don’t care about your stupid Independence Day any more than you care about our stupid Canada Day. In fact, a lot of Canadian hockey writers end their “season” on July 1st and are on the third day of their summer benders on Independence Day.
2) If you think it’s just Canadian media that wants it changed you need to take off the xenophobic glasses and pay better attention.
3) Cool story about 2012 when UFA day was July 4th. Here’s a fun fact: UFA day in 2012 was July 1st.

Once again, CharDee, you’ve got all the facts but you have absolutely no clue how to share them without name-calling and trying to put someone down. And that’s just a damn shame.

Yes please, I’m fine with moving it, I think that will make it better all around.  I’m usually up north with spotty service that week, and some of the better diggers and analysts are out or working remote too,, I think you move it back a week and you get better coverage too.
