from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe,
It took all summer and into the first day of training camp for the Bruins and David Pastrnak to settle their disagreement. Flexibility may have saved both sides time and anxiety.
Under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement, which expires on Sept. 15, 2022, players on their entry-level contracts, such as Pastrnak was through 2017, cannot earn more than $925,000 annually in base salary.
One season of data is enough evidence that Auston Matthews is a prodigy. But the 2016 first overall pick cannot start earning what he deserves until his fourth NHL season. By then, the center coming off a 40-29—69 rookie season could be chasing Connor McDavid’s $12.5 million annual threshold.
A possible solution is to eliminate some of the rigidity in the CBA. It would allow players and teams to take erasers to contracts that are currently written in permanent marker.
