from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,
Stars winger Mattias Janmark will have knee surgery to address an issue of osteochondritis dissecans and will be out a minimum of 5-6 months, general manager Jim Nill said Friday.
Janmark, 23, has been skating in camp and was expected to play in the Stars' preseason game in Colorado Wednesday when his knee locked up. Doctors examined the knee and discovered the problem which is described by Wikipedia as: "A joint disorder in which cracks form in the articular cartilage and the underlying subchondral bone.[1] ...OCD is caused by blood deprivation in the subchondral bone. This loss of blood flow causes the subchondral bone to die in a process called avascular necrosis. The bone is then reabsorbed by the body, leaving the articular cartilage it supported prone to damage. The result is fragmentation (dissection) of both cartilage and bone, and the free movement of these bone and cartilage fragments within the joint space, causing pain and further damage.
Nill said the condition is congenital and added that chances of full recovery are 80 percent.
