All About Hockey In Pittsburgh

from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
I‘m not sure any of us can fully process what‘s happened to hockey in Pittsburgh, from the three championships to the 14 scoring titles in 24 years to the various events — some as bizarre as they were blessed — that led to the confluence of Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby.
But here we are …
· A 255-game sellout streak.
· A season-ticket waiting list of 9,500.
· Higher local TV ratings than any U.S.-based NHL team and higher than any NBA team.

I’m from the Pittsburgh area and have followed the Penguins for a long time now. I was going to games when our “stars” were RicoFata,Josef Melichar, Morozov, etc. We can not claim anything of the sort. Nobody cared about hockey then unless Mario was playing even though his time had passed.
He tarnished his legacy to keep the Penguins going. So things are great now, sure. But at least Toronto is still sold out and the devotion is crazy even though they haven’t won much for a long time.

[The Penguins aren‘t just a phenomenon. They‘re a freak. They‘re scaling heights of popularity no American team has known.
Yeah, I generally like what I have read of Mr. Kovacevic’s work, but he really needs to give that one a little more thought.
