January 23, 2013 – CBC and Scotiabank are celebrating Canada’s national pastime and the heart that defines the players and communities involved in the game with the 13th edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada. The day-long broadcast on CBC features all seven Canadian NHL teams in action on Saturday, February 9 from Peterborough, ON.

“Scotiabank is excited to celebrate teams at both the community and NHL level across Canada through its sponsorship of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada,” said Anatol von Hahn, Scotiabank Group Head, Canadian Banking. “We are committed to building teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship in the communities where we live and work through our support of more than 4,500 minor hockey teams across the country. We look forward to sharing stories from teams of all kinds and invite families and fans of all ages to attend this year’s festivities or watch from home as we celebrate Canada’s game.”

Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada connects Canadians to the game they love with stories from communities across the country and live looks at local celebrations taking place from coast-to-coast-to-coast. The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Heart’ and throughout the day CBC will present viewers with stories that demonstrate the passion that brings people and communities together through the game of hockey, and life lessons learned by being involved in grassroots hockey.

This year’s broadcast begins at 12 noon ET/9 a.m. PT with Ron MacLean and Don Cherry live from Peterborough and the Under the Lock Hockey Tournament on the Trent Canal and an OHL game between the Peterborough Petes and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds as the backdrop. From there MacLean and Cherry will be joined by NHL Alumni and former Olympic athletes to bring Canadians a full day of exciting events including live look-ins from grassroots hockey celebrations across the country. In addition to Peterborough, other Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada event locations such as St. Johns, NL will be featured on the broadcast. Further event and broadcast details will follow in the coming days.

“Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will be an unforgettable day for Canadians, who are devoted fans and truly love this great game,” said Olympic gold medalist, Scotiabank Hockey Ambassador and Hockey Night in Canada reporter Cassie Campbell-Pascall. “Canadians are passionate hockey fans and we want to make sure this year’s event is a memorable one for everyone whether they attend Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada events or tune into the CBC broadcast.”

The games begin at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT with the Edmonton Oilers visiting the Detroit Red Wings, while the Winnipeg Jets play host to the Ottawa Senators. Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada continues following the first games with more from MacLean as well as live look-ins from the celebratory events taking place across the country.

Scotiabank Hockey Tonight leads viewers into the evening set of games at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, followed by an Original Six match-up that sees the Toronto Maple Leafs travel to Montreal to take on the rival Canadiens at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT. The final game of the night has the Calgary Flames taking on the Canucks in Vancouver at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT followed by After Hours with Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey.

A number of events are set to lead up to February 9, including on-ice clinics and school visits with the Stanley Cup.
