Alex Ovechkin Should Not Be Suspended For Missing The All-Star Weekend

from Christine Brennan of USA TODAY,

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is being suspended by the NHL for one game for what amounts to being really smart.

At the wise old hockey age of 33, Ovechkin is skipping a meaningless exhibition – the league’s All-Star Game – to save himself for the rest of the season and presumably the playoffs, where the Capitals will be trying to win a second consecutive Stanley Cup.

Ovechkin should be hailed for this decision, not punished for it. He’s missing the pomp and circumstance of the All-Star Game to help ensure his availability for the most important portion of the NHL season, the playoffs. If college football stars not playing in bowl games, which still count towards a team’s record, has become acceptable, then a player like Ovechkin reasonably missing an exhibition game so he can be available to his team for the rest of the season should be too.

Unfortunately, that’s not how it works in the NHL.

Counterpoint: Alex Ovechkin should not skip the All-Star game.

Ovechkin should be hailed for this decision, not punished for it.

Yes, let’s hail him for ignoring the biggest fan-centric event of the year. Let’s hail him because we all know that if he plays in this half-speed, meaningless exhibition game it will definitely be the difference in whether or not the Cap can repeat as champions.

It is a bit of a fallacy to compare Ovechkin with a college football player. The first is under a contract to play in the NHL with a large salary and likely a large insurance policy to match. The college football player is essentially risking everything to play in that bowl game. Perhaps they too could get an insurance policy but the cost would have to come out of their own pocket something that is quite difficult for a player without income to afford.

Back to Ovechkin. I personally think he should be allowed to skip the game simply because the guy has paid his dues. He’s gone to numerous all star games over the years and fully embraced the concept. He’s put himself out there to entertain the fans above all else at these events. There should be exceptions for players who have participated in All Star events in the past.

I think it’s ironic that the punishment is an extra day off (via suspension).

He also loses salary which is no small amount, approximately $121,951. I guess when you’ve made about $120M (pre-tax, before endorsements) you can overlook that $120K.

Yeah, I kind of doubt he cares too much.  It goes to a good cause, too, so there’s that aspect of it.

So where were all these supporters when it was NIck Lidstrom getting suspended for missing the ASG Weekend because he was actually HURT?

Yeah no, I don’t want to hear it now.  If it was OK by you then, it’s OK now…
