NEW YORK (March 4, 2021) – Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for spearing Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic during NHL Game No. 359 in Boston on Wednesday, March 3, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
The incident occurred at 14:30 of the third period. Ovechkin was assessed a minor penalty for slashing.
The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Just for reference on the absurdity of a $5,000 fine for Alex Ovechkin….Based on his $9,538,462 cap hit/aav this year, it would be the equivalent of $41.94 fine for a person making $80,000 a year.
Don’t care how much of a punk Frederic is, this is the reason Ovi may catch something cheap in the near future, because $5k is a hilarious attempt to deter that stuff.

I don’t remember a beyond veteran generational superstar
needing to fight a pesky rookie who is mainly just a fighter thus far
just because he won’t get the message and play hockey rather than endlessly
trying to make a name for himself. He deserved a cheap shot from someone like Chara. Weirdly narcissistic behavior. He’s the guy who’s dad stood up and celebrated because his kid beat up Brandon Tanev who is anything but a fighter.
Apparently he was taught to be a clown and a show off.

Thank Buttman and his insistence on taking fighting out of the game. Think this wouldn’t have been worked out if the instigator rule wasn’t there?
