Alfredsson Can’t Last Forever

from Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen,

Another Ottawa Senators season beckons, another year with Daniel Alfredsson as the front-line right-winger.

Just how long can that continue?

As the soon-to-be 38-year-old Senators captain made his case for National Hockey League players to continue their participation in the Olympics at the World Hockey Summit in Toronto on Wednesday, it served as a reminder of his impressive tenure with the team.

I think Alfredsson is probably good for another year as a point-per-game (or better) player. If he stays healthy, that could extend into a second season, but I wouldn’t count on it. He’s at that age where injuries could jeopardize the remainder of his playing days. That being said, I hope he stays healthy and finishes out his career on a positive note!

Alfredsson has been quoted in the past as saying that if he feels he can’t continue to produce, he will stop playing. Apparently he even had a moment during a previous season where he believed the time had come - where despite his good numbers he felt he was not as effective in certain situations. However, he has continued to be a high producer for the Sens, a leader, and a virtual deity among Ottawa fans. While he has suffered injuries, they don’t appear to slow him down for long - Ottawa fans have been repeatedly amazed by his ability to come back from injuries with amazing speed (sometimes returning weeks before he’s due).

Still, I think there is a feeling around the Sens club and followers that he may eventually have to be counted on less and less. A top line right wing and heir apparent to Alfie may become the team’s top priority. Peter Regin’s strong play when asked to step up during last years playoff has a lot of fans picking him to step into the role, but he’d have a lot to prove before most would seriously consider him anywhere near a replacement for the Captain.
