Ah, So It Is The GMs We Can Blame

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Gary Bettman infuriated players across the table from him at NHL headquarters on Thursday — and, by extension, NHLPA membership — by claiming that a number of general managers had told him they regret some of the contracts they’d previously handed out and would welcome the opportunity to “dismantle” their teams in order to meet the steep drop to the league’s proposed $60 million cap for 2013-14, sources have told The Post.

The players responded with a mixture of anger and skepticism, demanding to know the identity of these alleged GM’s. Bettman refused to name the straw men in seeking to counter the players’ position that adopting a $60M cap — even with two amnesty buyouts — would be punitive against big-market, big-spending franchises.

I’d say Brooks’ point is more about the bait-and-switch negotiating tactics by the league after the first disclaimer deadline passed.

Saying that some GMs want to dismantle their teams for regrettable contracts isn’t the main issue of the article and it’s not even a particularly large issue.  Saying that without giving names is essentially an agent’s tactic that the players should be all too familiar with.

“I’m not sure my guy is going to want to play for you for 3 years at $5M a year. We’re seeing offers for $6M over the same time span.”

Still, take the whole article with a healthy dose of knowledge that Brooks remains as pro-NHLPA as ever.

I’m sure if Bettman did what the majority of GMs want, we would be playing hockey right now.

Agree completely. The question of GMs is an interesting one because I’m sure that if you could anonymously poll them, you’d get a decent number who would rather operate without a cap, perhaps a significant number of them overlapping with the mysterious number of them who would like to be able to get rid of some of their mistakes.

GMs are in an interesting position businesswise here.

I agree, but what Brooks’ point was, was that upon hearing that the players reacted emotionally, got insulted, and the tone of the negotiations suffered as a result.

Which has been my criticism of the PA all along.  They’re being a bunch of Sonny’s and they’re all in a car on their way to talk to their sister right now.  It’s a clear day as they make the left turn onto the causeway.  Hey, where’s that guy at the toll gate going?

There’s no reason to let Bettman get under their skin.  None.  They need to get disciplined and start thinking about the scoreboard instead of paying Bettman back for every slight real or perceived.

All that aside, of course a smaller cap is punitive to big market teams.  The high floor as a result of a higher ceiling is punitive to small market teams, but I sure don’t hear the PA whining about that.

They’re told what they can spend and they spend it.  Then they either succeed or fail and keep or lose their jobs.  They don’t have to care about profitability, all they have to care about is having the best team they can out there and the best coach to run it.

The problem here is that all too often GMs are fired one year too late, and their desperate, flailing attempts to keep their jobs end up stuck on the cap sheets of the teams they eventually get the boot from for many years after they are gone.

It’s amazing that you’re critical of the players for being offended for getting double crossed and lied to (to their face, even) by a decommissioner who nearly had his head explode a couple weeks ago behind the NHL podium. If you’re annoyed that the players have passion, perhaps you should watch knitting instead - and especially if you’re not seeing the other side as emotionally demonstrative to the detriment of the negotiations. Only the Fehr Bros. have kept icebox cool through this whole self-inflicted league injury.

Update to recent post relating NHL proposal to opt out of CBA if caught hiding over 2% of HRR—it was withdrawn when contested by PA.

Don’t be obtuse.

What I am saying is that passion which short-circuits rationality is self-destructive.

When they are on the ice do these same players give in to every act of agitation by an opponent and drop their gloves, or chase the guy around to Rough them in payback?

Of course not.  It would be stupid of them to play that way.

Just like it is stupid of them to negotiate that way.

especially if you’re not seeing the other side as emotionally demonstrative to the detriment of the negotiations.

Oh good grief.  Are you actually trying to be serious here?

Update to recent post relating NHL proposal to opt out of CBA if caught hiding over 2% of HRR—it was withdrawn when contested by PA.

So the NHL changed language in a document they provided to the PA that represented a new offer, and when asked by the PA to change language they changed the language.

For crying out loud, people, it’s called fine print for a reason.  Yes, it’s shady… but it’s shady like the PA saying they agreed to 50-50 when they had only agreed to take 65ish mil until that became 50-50, if it ever did, at some point way down the road.

This is how big money negotiations work.

Personally, I can’t believe the good GM’s are on board with Gary’s new CBA. By removing what has been termed cap circumvention, tightening the rules around ELC and second contracts, upping the UFA age, etc. creative GM’s are going to be severely constrained.

I can think of scouting as one of the few areas where a GM can still distinguish himself, but in general it seems like it’s going to be a paint by numbers proposition.

I guess Doug Maclean was one generation too soon…

“Well, I’m not gonna say who, but most of your bosses think you’re bums who should be out on the street. Also, they didn’t want to invite you to their memorial day barbecue last year but I made them”-Gary Bettman

Real effective, Gary. You really fooled them and accomplished a lot with this one.

Get this snide **** out of the room. Let Daly handle it. I don’t like him, but the players do (relatively speaking).

And while he might be prone to pessimistic melodramatics, at least he doesn’t sit down at a negotiating table and loudly imply the coworkers/bosses/neighbors of his negotiating partner hate them.

But of course you would not find anything wrong with Bettman suddenly coming out of nowhere with something like this, since your strategy is to change the meaning and context of other people’s arguments into something you can make a point against.

Posted by Evilpens on 01/04/13 at 01:09 PM ET

Yeah, he’s almost as far up Fehr’s ass as you are up Bettman’s.

but it’s shady like the PA saying they agreed to 50-50 when they had only agreed to take 65ish mil until that became 50-50, if it ever did, at some point way down the road.

It’s not shady when, for the entirety of the negotiations, they’ve been honest about wanting to get to 50/50 eventually rather than immediately be there.

It’s incredible that you equate openness and honesty with being “shady”.

While I agree the players reacting emotionally isn’t a positive, why would the league want to push buttons like that?  Instigating it is rationally choosing to torpedo negotiations, and indicative that the league position really is that they don’t want a season on anything other than their complete set of terms.

Don’t be obtuse.

It’s perfectly rational to not like being lied to and insulted.  It is stupid to allow that reaction to impact your ability to negotiate intelligently.

It’s called wearing big boy pants.

But of course you would not find anything wrong with Bettman suddenly coming out of nowhere with something like this, since your strategy is to change the meaning and context of other people’s arguments into something you can make a point against.

You are a liar and a hypocrite, Garth.  Plain and simple.

Feel free to continue to lie as much as you feel you need to, but I’m going to put you in the penalty box for a while in the hope that you’ll choose instead to trying being honest.

Best of luck.
