“We don’t have as many holes as some people think.  I attribute that to the development of Brendan Smith. You’re not going to replace Nicklas Lidstrom. He’s going to be replaced by all defensemen picking it up. Brad Stuart is a loss. I look at the addition of Kyle Quincey, the development of Brendan Smith, Jonathan Ericsson. We got Nik Kronwall, Jakub Kindl is 25, Ian White had a good year. We don’t have big names, but we have good players. Jonathan Ericsson is developing into a shut-down defenseman.”

-Ken Holland, GM of the Detroit Red Wings.  More from Holland by Chuck Pleiness at Red Wings Front.

Not sure what to think of that quote other than it sounds like somebody that is about to do very little come Sunday.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and find out in 48 hours.

Boy, Holland really IS trying to sell the Wings’ program. Hopefully none of Detroit’s FA targets have watched Ericsson in action.

In other words, “I like our team blah blah blah”.  Is this a preemptive strike to lesson the blow when he fails to sign a big name free agent on July 1st?

GMs lie this time of year.  Fall is for the back-to-school, winter is for the snuggling, spring is for the butterflies humping, and summer is for the general managers lying.

I’ve been very, very optimistic about the Wings on Sunday. But this….well this just flat out pisses me off and puts me over on the side of many of my friends that think Kenny is just full of it now.

He’s about saving his own rep and the players that he drafted/signed.

Ian White has one Lidstrom-less year left on his deal. Let’s see how he does when paired w/Ericsson.
STOP TELLING US HOW GOOD SMITH IS!!!! IF HE WERE SO GOOD, HE’D HAVE BEEN IN THE LEAGUE BY NOW!!! FOR GOD’S SAKE MAN, ENOUGH. IT’S LIKE CHRIS PITTARO ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

What should Holland say? “We’re desperate for a top 6 scorer and a top pair dman?” Nonetheless, not what us Wing fans want to hear….

THAT says a ton while saying very little. Sounds like it’s gonna be like the deadline this year… money to spend and we’ll sit pat or do next to nothing.
Given the status of the team, a splash is all but totally necessary IMO.

This is coming from a GM who just lost two of his top four dmen in the past month and whose team has been fading out of the playoffs more quickly with each year that has passed since its last cup finals appearance in 2009.

If he’s really thinking that his existing roster is going to address these massive roster losses… well, good luck with being right.

I hope we all can look back at this in a few days and laugh at what a great sense of humor this man has.

How about, “we’re going to evaluate the market.” It’s truthful, doesn’t get everyone in a panic, and tells other teams the Wings are players.

I know and I’m absolutely holding my breath that Kenny actually will make the splash, but I absolutely do not want to hear a hint of panic in Holland’s interviews.  More of what he said shows earnestness, but not panic.  That’s exactly what I want to hear while I’m ready to shit my brains out of my fingertips.

We need another defenseman,” Holland said. “We’re going to explore the market and make a decision. We have 12-13 forwards, but do we have the right 12-13 forwards? That’s the question.

“We’d like to make a move, another skilled forward or a bottom-six guy that gives us size or another dimension,” Holland added. “We do plan to be involved, hoping to make a move or two, but we got internal things going on.”

If the big guns go to Pittsburgh, how can you blame Kenny? They’ll make unreal offers for those guys, but if their minds are already made up about going to play with Crosby & Co., what can you do about it?

Eric, I don’t know if you are aware of this or not, but the Wings fans…at least many of us, elitists that we are…don’t use excuses like this. You know who does?

Columbus, St. Louis, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Florida, etc…

It’s whiny and deuschy and lets the Wings/Ken get off scott-free.

If they don’t land players, then it’s Ken’s fault for leaving the well so effing dry.

I knew this would send people into a panic.  Holland doesn’t want to trash his team in the press and make the program look weak to free agents.  Honestly, with the money the team has, if Suter and Parise don’t come to Detroit, it’s not going to be because of anything Holland can control.  Believe me, they will both get big offers.  People don’t seem to understand that Holland isn’t and never has been a GM like Brian Burke who’s gonna blow his mouth off to the press about things to get some cheers.

Seriously, even if KH wasnt going to go all out to try and sign Parise and Suter (even though the Brunner signing shows theyre in selling-the-program mode) we all know Mike Illitch will make sure it happens.

Yeah, when I sat Nd thought about it five minutes longer, it occurred to me that Holland perhaps had other GMs in mind, thinking he might as well not start inflating salaries before he even makes an offer. We’ll just have to see

Enh, I wouldn’t worry too much about it, really.

The thing is, this isn’t about building the best team possible for the 2013 season, it’s about allowing the Wings to be consistently good for the next 5-10 years and not in situations where, like in 2010, they’re dumping guys left and right just to make cap.

Would it be nice to land Suter and/or Parise to long term deals?  Of course.  I just don’t think that failing to do both (or even either) has all that much impact on the long-term prognosis for the Wings.

The thing about these big UFAs is that you really only need to land 1 or maybe 2 of them at the most every 5-10 years to fill that particular quota of talent.

Are there going to be years where the cupboard isn’t full?  Sure.  Last year was one of them, as was 2011.  That those years ‘only’ result in the Wings finishing top 4 or 5 in the conference and going a round or two deep shouldn’t really be looked at like some kind of curse, especially in a capped league where teams really don;t string together long playoff streaks.

It’s going to be a lot of teams out of the playoffs one year going to the round of 4 the next as the cap sinks deeper and deeper in.

I was fine with what he said until he stated Ericsson was developing into a shut-down d-man.  That’s absolutely laughable.  Not a shred of truth in that statement.  That one sentence might have invalidated any other recruiting help his statement might have done because I’m pretty sure UFA’s don’t like being treated like they are stupid.
