“Personally, I’d rather have a player with a separated shoulder than someone with a concussion.  I don’t know why it’s that difficult to look at the equipment and say, ‘We really need to do something with the shoulder pads and elbow pads.’”

Or we start making the pads out of metal. That will give a lot of young prospects a shot at cracking the lineup.

Cam Neely is spot on. Problem is, no one else is remotely close.

Is he the first person to suggest this?

Been preaching this the past 3 years.  Good to see Neely’s on board.  Put it on the list of obvious answers to problems the NHL wont use with smaller goalie pads.. calling penalties consistantly.. allowed video replay for pivotal moments/outcomes in the game.  Lonely out here in common sense land.

Sure seems like a great start. Concussions are becoming a problem for peewee hockey due to…..... wait for it…... Composit plastics! Make everyone wear Chelios/Shanahan style pads and see if these wankers wanna throw themselves foolishly at opposing players anymore.

Somebody yesterday asked for more media types to espouse the goalie pads thing.

I’m making the exact same request of media types to share this.

Hockey players don’t have any more or less respect for each other than they ever have. What they have now is more speed, more size, and MUCH more safety in laying these hits on other people. I’d bet any amount of money that Gordie Howe in padding like they have today would have really put a hurting on some people’s careers.

The speed of today’s game is simultaneously it’s most beautiful and most dangerous aspect. if you want to keep the speed in places where it should be while limiting it in places where it should not, the shoulder pads are precisely where you should be looking.

Science, people. Would you let somebody hit you in the stomach with a baseball bat?

What if you were wearing this?
