“That’s a different time and different era and different players, different teams, different depth in the league,” Babcock said. “Now there’s a whole bunch of good teams, not a couple in each side. It’s way different even than seven years ago, when I came here. It’s night-and-day different than when I arrived in the league 10 years ago. Things have changed. I don’t know how you compare that.
“Any time you can win 20 games in a row, you’ve done something. That’s just the facts. My first year here, I don’t know how many games we won, we never did it. Scotty (Bowman’s) team here won 62 games, they never did it. So obviously, it’s very difficult to do, and we feel fortunate that we’ve done it, because we needed the points.”
-Mike Babcock, head coach of the Detroit Red Wings on some people questioning the Wings’ 20 game home winning streak. More from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Best part of the story was Bert’s comment on Franzen having a “maintenance” day and not practicing today, “Mule got a goal and an assist last night, so he thinks he deserves a day off”.

Doesn’t he already take off every other game?

Not a Wings fan, but you set records by the rules in place at the time you set them. They have won 20 in a row at home and everyone else in the league today has the same ability to do it and hasn’t, so end of story.

As others have said…20 games is nice and all…the points are nicer, but something silver and shiny in June is the nicest of all.

while nice, they’ve got to keep their eyes on the Cup.

I agree with everything here except best coach ever comment. Bowman was better.

Scotty (Bowman’s) team here won 62 games, they never did it.
I think that right there demonstrates just how rare it is.
I remember that 62 win season vividly. They were demolishing teams night in and night out. That they didn’t even manage to do it says something.

Seems like no matter what the Red Wings accomplish, there’s always a “but;” i.e., “We won but it was ugly,” “Yes, 20 in a row at home but some were shoot out wins,” ‘Yes, Z and Mule scored but they need to do so more often.” Geez.
I wish for once Wings fans would just stop and admire - in awe - the fact that our beloved Wings are on top of the NHL, looking way better than they’ve looked since winning the Cup in 2008, and will make the playoffs for the 21st year in a row, with an elite goaltender who has playoff experience and the best head coach ever. Does it get any better than that?
LET’S GO RED WINGS !!!!!
