“We are not in control and quite honestly, I’m kind of tired of everybody pointing to us and making comments that the city of Glendale can’t get the job done. We have no control over it and I think probably the NHL is very happy that writers and reporters continue to point to the city of Glendale for not getting the job done because it takes the attention directly off them.”
-Elaine Scruggs, Mayor of Glendale. More on the Coyotes situation from Lisa Halverstadt of th Arizona Republic.

To be fair, the Mayor had all the control in the world BEFORE she agreed to give the NHL 25 million bucks a year.
So, yeah, once you hand the NHL your credit card you’re pretty much SOL.
That’s why doing it in the first place was stupid, Elaine.

I don’t feel as bad for the hockey fans in Phoenix (transplant Wings fans not included) as I did for the Jets when they left the first time. The Jets weren’t a team that couldn’t draw fans, it was the economics that cost the Peg the team the first go around. In Phoenix, they just don’t care. 6,000-7,000 fans per game? That’s just pathethic. It’s just time to pull the plug on this experiment. I’ll hate it for the Wing fans there, but 2 sellouts a year doesn’t justify keeping that team there.

Incredibly necessary comment. I will truly feel badly for the city of Glendale and Phoenix’s fans when the ‘Yotes inevitably leave, but I hope the NHL realizes what a joke they’ve made of this franchise over the past two years, rather than looking like heroes to Quebec or Hamilton, or whoever.
They’ve put short-term gain (Glendale’s $$) ahead of long-term stability and benefit in another city, and it makes the NHL look like a “mickey mouse” organization.
