“Yes, players dumb enough to participate in polls designed to crap on fellow NHLPA members are not very bright.  They can all go defecate in their chapeaus. I am thrilled to have both players on my team.

“And by the way? Anyone who wants to tell Dion that in person should fly to Ottawa in about two weeks.”

-Brian Burke, President and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs on the recent Sports Illustrated poll on overrated players.  More from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star.

So… if I understand right, what I think Brian Burke is saying here is that being voted into the ASG is indisputable proof that a player is really good?

Or… maybe he’s saying that fans are better at recognizing good hockey players than NHLers are?

Or is he saying that the Senators are better than the Leafs (since, you know, they have more all-stars, and apparently being fan-voted all-star is the mark of a good hockey player)?

Why would a player have to be stupid to participate in a poll about what other players are overrated?

One can assume that there’s not a single player who participated that named a guy from his own team and also that most people who participated had to have named someone that he doesn’t like.

You can’t say that it’s dumb for players to think that other players are overrated or that it’s dumb to tell someone under the veil of anonymity.

Also?  Phaneuf is vastly overrated, but I don’t know why Mike Komisarek is on the list because I don’t know anyone at all who rates him highly at all.

Maybe the fact that he’s still playing in the NHL rather than riding a bus in the AHL makes him overrated?

Burke and Wilson have both failed logic. Overrated doesn’t mean they aren’t good or even aren’t worth having, it means you think people think they are better than what they truly are. So just because a guy is good and I’d take him on my team doesn’t mean he can’t be overrated. And if this article didn’t bother them and it is stupid, why’d they spend so much time repsonding to the question?

PS
I resisted making an Avery-esque comment on who may be saying Phanuef is overrated.
