“Especially in the summertime, I try not to get involved in this type of, ‘How are you feeling’ conversation.

“There are things I would normally talk about with Sid and those are the captain’s stuff like scheduling with the team. If I was to talk to him now, I wouldn’t say, ‘How do you feel today?’ I would say, ‘Where are you now?’ I would ask, ‘When are you coming to Pittsburgh?’ I would ask, ‘How many fish did you catch up in Nova Scotia?’ “

That makes total sense. Why would the coach care about the health of the NHL’s star player, his team’s only hope of winning another Cup, and the most famous concussed-person on Earth?  I’m sure he hasn’t thought about it at all.

Why not just say he’s not in a position to talk about his player’s health out of repect for the player’s privacy?  Crosby can easily tell us all how he’s doing if he wanted us to know.

Crosby can easily tell us all how he’s doing if he wanted us to know.

Except unfortunately, he really can’t.  All he can say is if he’s experiencing symptoms or not. Which is probably why he hasn’t been asked to say anything.  He doesn’t know and doesn’t want to speculate.

Not even Crosby’s going to know if he’s ready to start the season until he comes back to Pittsburgh, takes a baseline test, and gets cleared by the doctors.  Which everyone already knew at the beginning of the summer until that DJ took to twitter causing a panic.  Wasn’t it also a DJ in Toronto that started the ‘Crosby’s going to retire’ rumor in March/April?

How is that not telling us how he’s doing?

Beacuse him saying ‘Hey! I feel great!’ won’t mean jack if the doctors don’t clear him to play?  He could feel great when the question is asked and feel terrible when it comes time to determine if he’s ready to go.

His opinion of how he feels /= him being able to play. Not him, not Shero, not Dan Bylsma.

True enough. I was mainly wondering why Bylsma goes out of his way to act like it’s not a big enough deal to ‘get into’ over the summer when it so obviously is. It’s not like he’s talking about having no interest in Matt Cooke’s allergies. If Crosby isn’t talking, why would the coach? But it’s silly to pretend it’s just some typical player’s broken finger healing in the off-season.

Also, the fans and media are very interested in whether he has symptoms still. So while it’s true that saying “I feel great” doesn’t mean he’s going to play, saying “I had 3 migraines last week” is probably a good indicator that he won’t play. Obviously nobody will know anything concrete until he steps on the ice, or doesn’t.
