I’m glad [the turnaround has] arrived.  When you have lean years, and if you’re drafting properly, eventually it will come around for you.

“I think Dale Tallon put a lot of piece of the puzzle in place, and now Stan Bowman has picked up from there.”

I don’t think that’s really true.  A lot of teams went through a lot of lean years and probably drafted properly and never reached the point of Cup contention.  Even the Hawks itself basically wasted the entire decade starting from the mid-nineties as bottom dweller before they were able to find the current group.

So, what you’re saying is that eventually…it came around for them…

No, I’m saying that eventually, those draft picks from around 95 to 05 never materialized to a good team in Chicago.  The point is that this strategy is not reliable at all, when eventually means 15 years or more.

You might want to re-read the quote because you’re missing a key phrase: “drafting properly”.

From 2002-2007 (ie. the years between playoff appearances):
Duncan Keith
Matt Ellison (maybe not a great pick, but he was traded to Philly for Patrick Sharp)
Adam Burish
Brent Seabrook
Dustin Byfuglien
Cam Barker
Dave Bolland
Troy Brouwer
Niklas Hjalmarsson
Jonathan Toews
Patrick Kane

Some might consider that “drafting properly”, and some might say that this “drafting properly” has helped to turn it around for the Blackhawks, considering that a number of those picks have pretty big roles in the success they’re having right now.

Maybe you disagree.

I agree that drafting properly helped the Hawks.  My point is that even if a team goes through a few lean years, it doesn’t mean that the said team is going to become as good as Chicago is today.  Even if the manager makes all the right picks, he is limited by what players are available to be drafted.  I’m not sure a poor performing team is able to find players of those quality mentioned above all the time, even if it continues to miss players year after year.

Ok, but that’s not what the quote says.
