Afternoon Line

Ranting and raving won’t do any good anymore. The Rangers have been beaten down enough. What they need now is to be built up. If the biggest thing is sticking together, that means the biggest danger is splitting apart.

It might be premature to say that the Rangers have tuned out Tortorella. They finished first in the East and went to the conference final under him last season. They have played only 27 games since, and they are struggling for many reasons. Some have been out of Tortorella’s control.

But it is not a stretch to say that Tortorella’s abrasive approach is easier to take when things are going well, that benching guys and (bleeping) about them publicly can grow old, and that the Rangers are in a fragile state of mind at a delicate point.

Like Cotsonika, but he’s off base here.

Ranger’s problem is obvious: lack of team speed with which to counterattack. There’s an individual guy here or there who gets around well (Callahan, McDonagh, Hagelin) but there are too many guys who don’t in the lineup (Richards, Girardi, Stepan, Boyle, Pyatt, Hamrlik, Asham, Halpern, arguably Staal…Hell, Gaborik’s coasting around like he’s got a parachute on his back and he used to be one of the fastest players in the league).

Last season, the ratio of guys who cover a lot of ground to guys who don’t was a Hell of a lot better.

Tortorella can be mean, nice, friendly, mercurial…doesn’t matter. Brad Richards and the other 7 or so guys I mentioned aren’t going to start covering more ground because they just aren’t able to do it. Roster’s constructed wrong.

“Rangers are in a fragile state of mind at a delicate point” What? Is he talking about hockey players or baseball players here? What sport does he think he’s covering?
