Afternoon Line

With that disappears any hopes of a full 2012-2013 season. I can live with a shortened season (preferably more than merely half the regular season games) given how little it seemed to affect the NBA last year, but this still hurts for the sheer fact that we’ve been sentenced to another month of no NHL hockey. And I mean, a month – that’s a sizable chunk of games. What if they reach a deal next week? (This obviously ensures they won’t, but still.)

It’s starting to feel more and more like a pissing contest between the two sides. We get it fellas – you’re not afraid to lockout/not play. You’re serious. Message received. Now go get serious about reaching a deal.

We’re in this together friends. The new goal is December.

This is an interesting point:  I wonder how many people would be satisfied with a partial season and full playoffs versus just having no hockey at all this year.

As a multi-sport fan, while it was nice and all to have the NBA back last year, the regular season was atrocious.  It was super compressed, clearly favored teams composed in one way over others, and there would be 15+ games for each team that were next to surefire losses just due to scheduling quirks.

I remember the partial NHL season back in 1995, and that was a complete joke as well.  Teams barely had a chance to define what they were before the playoffs started, and the playoffs themselves were essentially random chance, with the Devils playing a trap that few people had seen much of due to the season and refs clearly didn;t know how to call.

Personally, I’m leaning more towards just cancelling the whole season and getting in the full 82 next year… but as I said I’m a multi-sport fan, so it’s not like I can’t pretty easily replace my NHL time with all sorts of other stuff in the interim.

Since the league’s position is “my way or the highway,” I don’t think it is fair to blame the NHLPA for the impasse. They have proposed counteroffers only to be ignored. The NHL’s “revised” offers do not take into account the NHLPA’s offers at all. This isn’t on the players.

And I’m a hockey fan who doesn’t give a squirt about any other sport. This lockout has changed my habits quite significantly. I cancelled my cable subscription because I only really have a TV to watch hockey.

I’ve been considering the same thing. I kinda’ thought I only owned a TV for hockey ,and the last few weeks have confirmed my TV is used for pretty much hockey only.
