"Given the fact they’ve got $3.3 billion in revenue, I believe instead of fighting each other all the time, if there was a clear collaborative effort between players and owners once and for all, that $3.3 billion could be $5 billion. The NHL needs a culture more like the NFL and less like MLB."

-former Buffalo Sabres president Larry Quinn.  More from Quinn via Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.

Of course a former team executive wants it to be more like the NFL. Every owner is guaranteed to rake it in, all the while the players are relatively dirt cheap and likely to be flushed out of the league within five years of their first game. Pretty good deal for owners and management.

I like that MLB vs NFL reference as well. MLB has had labor peace and the NFL has pieces of meat.

The average NFL salary is 1.9 mil.  The average NHL salary is $2.4 mil.  Considering NFL rosters are over twice as large as NHL rosters and that usually the bottom third of a roster sees very little actual game time, I don’t know if ‘relatively dirt cheap’ is an accurate analysis.
