"You get a premium education with the opportunity to go compete for a national championship in a large city that really has no professional sports team. There's a lot to be offered up here."

-Urban Meyer, head coach of the Ohio State University football team, located in Columbus, on recruiting a player to OSU.

More from Brian Stubits at the Eye on Hockey.

added 6:58pm, via Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch.

Urban Meyer said he is a fan of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL and the Columbus Crew of Major League soccer, and in a text message sent to The Dispatch today he wanted to make it clear he misspoke in an interview with an Atlanta newspaper last week in which he was quoted as saying Columbus had no major league sports.

“I have great respect for both the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Columbus Crew organizations,” Meyer wrote today. “The intent of my comment about football recruiting was that Columbus doesn’t have professional football. I should have made that point clear, and I do apologize for the misunderstanding.

“I am pulling for the Blue Jackets in their playoff drive and I wish the best for the Crew under its new leadership.”

If guys get paid to play a sport and nobody cares, are they professional athletes?

Jesus people, is the inferiority complex such that you’re defending the f*cking Blue Jackets?

If you don’t get the B1G, get out of the discussion.

It has nothing to do with the Blue Jackets, or hockey, or the NHL.  At least not in the comments preceding yours so far…

Garth, did we strike a nerve? No one is defending the BJs; but we are pointing out that was an idiotic statement by Meyer.

And the others make a valid point: OSU pays its players more than the BJs, so the comment is doubly-idiotic.

In all seriousness,

Everything I’ve read and ever heard about Meyer, he likely didn’t misspeak.  He genuinely is clueless about EVERYTHING outside of football.  He’s not been entrenched in the area for decades now.  In the 80’s when he coached HS ball and Ohio State positionally, there were no Blue Jackets or Crew.  When he coached at Bowling Green, the Jackets and Crew were basically both brand new.

The elite coaches at the elite collegiate and professional levels literally have no lives outside of game prep and studying football.  No lives.  At all.  It’s part of why most of those coaches are bereft of any personality or basic social skills, quite frankly.
