Critics are predicting the NHL is making a mistake by making outdoor games less rare. But NHL probably would argue it has to ride the big wave when it presents itself.

No one is saying the NHL will play an extra five outdoor games every season. But right now, these teams, with these venues, at this time, makes this a high-percentage all-in.

right now, these teams, with these venues, at this time

I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had or overheard in which the lack of outdoor games between heated rivals the Ottawa Senators and the Vancouver Canucks was brought up and lamented.

Oh wait, I can.  It’s zero.  Zero conversations.
