Afternoon Line- Joe Starkey

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was criticized here and elsewhere for taking his sweet time to put a pandemic plan together. Looks now like it was worth the wait.

It looks to me, in fact, like this might be Bettman’s finest hour.

It’s early yet. Still technically the first round. But I’m blown away by how seamlessly the league has pulled this off, even after leaving Las Vegas at the last minute and making the tournament an All-Canada proposition.

I doubted whether a bubble concept could work. I certainly doubted whether the frantic intensity of playoff hockey would translate to television with no fans in the stands.

I’m no fan of Mr. Bettman but I have to agree here. This is one of his finest moments. But let’s not forgot all the other people including the players who had to be on board with the idea.

And for those who say “it’s all about money”, of course it is. The NHL is a business and they are doing their best during trying times to keep their business operating.

This thing is far from over but I like what I’ve seen so far. The caliber of hockey is quite good considering the amount of time off. I miss the energy of a real crowd and I miss being there in person but this is certainly better than watching the cornhole championships for the third time.
