Afternoon Line- Greg Wyshnski On John Scott

There were two phases of the John Scott campaign. There was the ballot-stuffing itself, a movement promoted by our podcast, that of Steve Dangle and then taken to incredible heights by the Reddit hockey board. No one is seeking to ret-con why that happened: As a joke, like electing the class clown as class president; as an affront to the NHL; as pure anarchy; but also as a way to add a level of entertainment and intrigue to an event that’s lacked it.

And then Phase 2 was the aftermath, when the influence of the fans ended and the decisions made by Scott, the Arizona Coyotes and the National Hockey League would dictate how it was going to play out.

With due respect to Don Cherry, calling the fans “jerks” and blaming them for the embarrassment that’s landed Scott in Newfoundland is lazy and nonsensical – unless we’re all suddenly endowed with the power to trade players and/or demote them to the AHL.

It appears you did not read the article, because that’s not the message. The message was that the nhl screwed this up as they ought to make right by John Scott.

The guys running this outfit just don’t have a clue. Hit them in the wallet. That is the only thing they understand.

John Scott should play. The Fans voted him in and it’s the right thing to do. The Fans, that make this whole thing possible(the NHL) have spoken.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Oh I read the article.  It was a poorly-obfuscated “This isn’t my, err…. I mean OUR fault!” because Wyshinski was one of the loudest champions of the “Scott for All Star” movement, and now that there were real-world ramifications of it he wants to cast blame on someone else.

Yes, the NHL completely screwed this up, as only the NHL can. A silly, yet meaningless situation has become a much bigger news story as they league has now snubbed almost everyone involved. Frankly, at this point the event would probably get more views - and it’d certainly get more coverage on other networks - if they let the big goon play.

This is ridiculous…i’ve seldom seen so much petty sympathy directed toward a colossally undeserving party.

Why can’t Don Maloney make the hockey moves, permitted by contract and CBA, that he sees fit?

Oh the fans, the fans, won’t somebody please think of the fans!!
(personally, I’m bothered far more by regular lockouts, followed by egregiously high ticket prices).

Ohhh…but we wanted our joke to come truueeee!!

You vote in a guy who’s bounced around between several teams and is so marginal he not only could be waived at any moment, but already was this season…and then you’re shocked when he’s demoted and thrown into a trade, given the Coyotes needed to clear the salary and that Montreal was willing to take him. Montreal got Jared Tinordi, a former first-rounder back in the deal. He still has some upside. Good deal.

The fact Scott is making $500,000 to play in the minors should be plenty of solace. Crocodile tears, for “the fans” and Scott, both.

Really, whenever so-called fans vote in a joke player, because they are so infatuated with their own childish humor, it should have the same effect as adding a complete no-move clause to his contract.

We can’t risk a GM’s personnel decisions interfering with viral pranks ever again!!
