Afternoon Line- Eric Duhatschek

Even though teams have gradually figured out that these types of contracts make no sense in the long term, they negotiate them anyway because the competition for high-end talent is so desperate that if you can get a player for the cost of his salary, some team somewhere is going to swallow hard and offer up the dollars needed to get the deal done. There were early mixed reviews about the Kane signing, largely for that reason. Here is a player who has just completed his ninth NHL season and has a career high of 57 points (in 74 games with the 2011-12 Winnipeg Jets). Injuries have derailed Kane at different times in his career but this season, he got into 78 games and managed 54 points. After spending time with the Sharks in the first and second round, it became pretty clear though that this would be the eventual outcome.
