Of course, the NHL — which has mandated the Oilers bring in this increased bureaucracy — is entitled to take this approach. It is, however, a symptom of our frustratingly overcautious, liability-obsessed times and of America’s pathetic gun culture. And even in the gun-goofy United States where lunatics regularly open fire at schools, restaurants and movie theatres — and could presumably do so at an NHL game — security experts suggest metal detectors are ill-advised.
