I have seen veteran players agree to take “hometown discounts” over the years and there is no question Green wants to stay in Washington. But how much of a discount are we talking? Green is making $6.1 million this season and there is no doubt in my mind someone will pay him very close to that, if not more, on the open market. Orpik [$5.5 million] and Niskanen [$5.75 million] take up a big chunk of the Caps’ spending on the blue line and I’m guessing the Caps would like to keep Green in the $4.5 million range to have enough to spend in other areas.
