Addressing The Rick Nash Trade Talk

from Jonathan Willis of The Cult Of Hockey,

It was only this evening that the most connected man in hockey, TSN’s Bob McKenzie said on national television that “Rick Nash, to our knowledge, is not available.”  It struck me as a sane comment in what is generally an insane time.

So I’m very surprised to write that things appear to have changed.

Renaud Lavoie, a hockey reporter with RDS, tweeted the following tonight:

2 NHL sources told me that #bluejackets Rick Nash is on the market. Nash have a no-movement clause and will controle his destiny.

RDS doesn’t have quite the same reputation for accuracy as its sister channel, TSN, but Renaud Lavoie is a veteran reporter and a solid source.  Additionally, in his French-language original article, Lavoie states that his original source for the story was a National Hockey League general manager….

The New York Daily News reports this evening that the Rangers and Blue Jackets have had personnel at each others games over the past month, including Columbus general manager Scott Howson, who attended the Rangers/Flyers match on Saturday night.  They also spoke to Nash’s agent, Joe Resnick, who declined to comment on the rumour.

This pisses me off just because I know Howson is gonna get fleeced AGAIN in this deal and the Rangers are gonna get Nash for peanuts

Then you’re looking at B. Richards, M. Gaborik, Rick Nash on one *#$%@& team.  They pull this off, it’s Ranger vs. Red Wings SCF

I love it.  So the “most connected man in hockey” makes a “sane statement in waht is generally an insane time” about Nash, saying he’s off the market but a less connected and reputable source says he’s on the market, so he must be on the market.

The feeling here in C-bus is Nash is on the market Garth, for about a week now.  I think Bobby Mac is trying to do either Sather or Howson a solid saying he’s not on the market to reduce the amount of competition.  Being the “most connected man in hockey” you’d think he’d need to do favors to keep those connections, not driving up the cost on Nash for the trading partner by immediately announcing in availability is the type of favor I could see him doing.  I will not be surprised when it happens.

I’m a firm believer that Columbus won’t get any better until he is moved.

Why would the Rangers get him for peanuts?  He’s going to come at a steep price even with that giant contract of his.  The CBJ would be crazy not to expect a king’s ransom in return.

Would you trust Scott Howson making this type of trade?

If Im running the show i certainly wouldnt want Howson to be the one to make this trade, but Ive got to imagine he wont pull a Pierre Gauthier and not shop him around for maximum value (within the teams he would waive his NTC for).  Im not so sure why he would be so quick to go to the NYR before, say, TOR as an Ontario boy or DET for a chance to win the Cup.  Nor what assets NYR have to give up for him.  But Im betting Nash and Carter will get moved if not by the deadline, at least by the draft.

I imagine it’s because Prospal has turned into a leader in the dressing room and they want to bring in other’s with a “winning” mentality and work ethic to change the culture of the dressing room.

Lot of history with the Rangers… Tyutin as well.

Howson likes to only trade with clubs he feels he knows, look how many times he’s picked up players he had in edmonton or traded with edmonton.  They feel that way with NYR.

NYR wont want to move a significant piece, bottom line, that’s how I know Howson will get fleeced Bezzie.  You think they’re getting Richards, Gaborik or Lundquist? Marc Staal?  Callahan? No, they aren’t giving up anything tangible and giving the Jackets picks is like loading their gun with blanks.  It’s only gonna be for some picks and I’d gladly give two picks to know what type of caliber player you’re getting.

And because Jeff Carter is untradeable.

See I just think Howson’s gotta be more careful than he has in the past.
Mr. McConnell has to know that whats left of his fan base is rather volatile at the moment and that more “wait and see” deals won’t wash.  I think if Nash is traded, Howson has to get full value for him or clean out his desk.

I would say that if Howson trades Nash it would be smart to do it in the off-season when the list of teams that might be attractive to Nash would be longer and thus it would be easier to get some quality in return for him.  In theory, at least.

This Rumor pissses me off! If DD Day does come and Nash is moved. We must get two or three of these players plus picks in return. One of these three: Richards, Gaborik or Lundquist. Plus two of these three: Marc Staal, Callahan, or Dubinsky. Plus, the Rangers first round pick this year! Those six and a first rounder (probably #24-30 if NYR keep winning) are all the Rangers have to offer. Nothing else would suffice. Howson will probably get a Used Puck Bag in Return!
I will not buy one more CBJ ticket if this rumor comes true and Howson gets hosed again…......This is a nightmare waiting to happen!....

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Last night, RDS (TSN’s French language sister station) reporter Renaud Lavoie reported that Columbus Blue Jacket franchise player Rick Nash “is on the market.”

This morning, Columbus Dispatch reporter Aaron Portzline wrote on his blog that “for the first time, (the Blue Jackets) are willing to listen to offers for captain Rick Nash.”

While it’s easy, and sometime necessary, to get hung on precise terminology on a story like this one—the differences between “on the market” as opposed to “listening to offers” as opposed to “being shopped”—here’s the bottom line:

Last week, in no uncertain terms, NHL teams were told Nash was not available and this week, he is. For the right team, anyway.

Less than two weeks to the NHL trade deadline, that is nothing less than a seismic shift.

That doesn’t mean he’ll necessarily be traded by the deadline but it does mean there has been a significant change in his status from last week to this week.

And while sources have confirmed to TSN what Lavoie and Portzline respectively reported in the last 12 hours, the real story is this:

None of this would or could be happening if Rick Nash didn’t want it to happen.

Dude, he’s not that good. He’s no better than Richards, Gaborik, or Lundqvist individually. Marc Staal appears to have a ceiling where in short order he could be as valuable a player as Nash, of course at a different position and for different reasons.

Based on what Philly fetched for Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, a reasonable expectation for Rick Nash is probably something along the lines of:

- An above average roster player
- A top prospect or first-round draft pick
- Two mid-round picks

If you frame that to the Rangers, that would look something like:

- One of Staal, Callahan, Dubinsky, or Stepan
- One of their top five prospects, though knowing the BJs, you might be able to convince them to take Zuccarello
- Two 2nd - 4th round picks from the next two seasons

Of course, you could make an argument that if the BJs wanted more roster players, they might want two of that first group and one less pick, or if they want picks, they might want a first-rounder instead of a top prospect, but I think this is at least a well-reasoned hypothetical given the recent big-name forwards that we’ve seen moved.

The Rangers would have to pay a heavy price. Maybe not as heavy as they should since you’ll have two bad GMs making a deal which is a recipe for unpredictability. But at a minimum, it seems like it would cost them two really good NHL hockey players plus one really good pick to get a deal done.

I’ve lived in central Ohio my whole life.  I grew up a Red Wings fan, and that will never change.  Fans around Columbus always look at me with disbelief and tell me that I gotta switch teams… lets just say the decision never to even think about that is made that much easier by the “home” team.

But more to the point, the CBJ organization the the Columbus Dispatch have been shoveling BS at the fans for years about Rick Nash being the second coming.  I won’t deny the fans a little share of hero worship, but you guys have to stop drinking the Koolaid.  He’s a big fish in a little pond, and this town has been way to attached to him.  Its allowed for too many excuses for Mr. Nash.

...I think Howson should demand all he can get for him of course, but your expectations are too high.
