Adam Oates Has An Issue With The Hertl Goal

from Katie Carrera of Capitals Insider,

Capitals Coach Adam Oates can appreciate the cool play, but sides with those who don’t see that type of goal as appropriate.

“I’m upset. I was just talking to George [McPhee] and he said all the kids do that nowadays, which I understand. But would he have done it on his first goal?” Oates said. “He hasn’t scored yet tonight and he gets a breakaway, is he going to do that on his breakaway? We’ll see.

“I think it was a little bit of a mood thing, which I’m sure they talked about, because they didn’t play him after that,” Oates continued. “I’m glad the coach did that because this league, it will bite you if you’re not sharp. Don’t disrespect the league. I’m sure it was a rookie mistake.”

During Oates’s playing days, a goal like that would have brought at least a fight or a solid slash from a goaltender, if not more.

I don’t care if a players shoves it in with the tip of their blade as they slide face first on their belly, if it goes in the net, it’s a good goal. This goal, though, this goal was a fantastic goal. I guess he’s whining about showboating or something. The solution is to stop whining, not stop making awesome highlight-reel plays.

I’m sure Oates teaches his players to only try to score in humble, tried-and-true ways that don’t upset the old guys in the crowd and don’t go in the net very often. Maybe that’s why his team is doing so well, because he’s such a traditional guy.

As a hockey fan, I love the goal.  As Rangers fan, it’s a whole different story.

I bet you if Ovechkin had done it, Oates wouldn’t complain.  Or maybe Oates’ problem lies more in realizing the kid already has 6 NHL goals.

Did Ranger fans complain when Marek Malik won a shootout with that exact same goal?  No, no they didn’t.  It was ok then apparently.

Look, if you let the kid get 3, and THEN let him do that 4th… that’s your fault, not his.

I get where he’s coming from in that Hertl is a rookie, had already scored 3 goals in the game, and wouldn’t have done that move had it been a close game. However, the goal was gorgeous and is great for the game from a fan and media perspective. It may have been a little “against the code,” but it was a spectacular goal.

I hope the first time a Caps goalie slashes a guy for embarrassing him that Oates gets himself a five-game suspension for saying that’s at all what should be happening.

What a shitty attitude.

As an old-school hockey guy, If I had to chose which is more offensive, the goal or Ovechkin jumping the glass, I would pick Ovechkin but neither should matter, it adds something to the game.

Misread the article.  Those were Carrera’s words, not Oates’

I’m actually better with that now that it’s just Oates whining instead of making a more-overt threat.

“a rookie mistake” huh? how absurd

whatever. if that’s the code, the code’s a joke. I mean how much time did the kid have to really think about it? it just happened that at the angle he was coming in at, that was the move that was going to work. If he had just done a slick forehand/backhand roofer, would that have also been in bad taste? Is he merely expected to take a wrist shot for the five hole when you’ve already scored 3 and your team is in the lead? What a joke. One of the things I love about hockey is how hard everyone plays no matter how big a blowout it is precisely because it’s a game that actually gets more dangerous if you don’t go 100%. If the kid relaxes and decides it’s over and he doesn’t need to really go all out anymore, that’s one way to end up in the hospital from an open ice blindside hit. what’s more, Oates’ main implication is that the kid wouldn’t have tried that in a more consequential situation and I think that is nonsense too. Why wouldn’t he? He obviously can do it. It obviously works. Others have done it in regular game play. So why exactly is this not just a regular spectacular hockey play (is it because Oates can’t do it?)?

and as others have pointed out, if the goalie makes the save, the kid looks kind of foolish for trying it. But instead, he looks like a badass, his confidence is inflated a bit more and it’s good for him, his team, and the game. Oates’ opinion is nonsense. He must also be pro-goon because they are also a relic from that same dusty old code of his

This goal, jumping on glass, all that stuff is nothing but a positive. What Oates is saying is ridiculous.

Hockey is such a competitive game and this is all about competition and showing off to your losing competition. Anyone complaining is either just a grumpy old man or is on the losing side. God forbid hockey is interesting or exciting!

This one confuses me… Especially coming from a talented player in his day. It’s not like Oates was Milbury when he played. You coach Ovie for heaven’s sake, set the skill free.

A rookie mistake would have been a play that resulted in the other team scoring.

Nice goal. I’ve seen one other player that can make it look that easy. Great going Hertl!

You’ve gotta be fuchin kidding me.  I wish all goals were that freaking amazing.  He didn’t even just dribble it acrossed the goal line, he roofed that puck with authority.  And to see that his family was there to share in that moment with him was something special.

I would kill to see a rookie with that kind of goal scoring ability in the Wings lineup (come on Mantha!).  The only people that should feel bad are the Rangers and their fans.

And this is why the league is unable to move forward and grow.
The dinosaurs that run it are still stuck in the past where hockey players shouldn’t talk, celebrate or even smile.

So basically, nobody’s allowed to hotdog, lay out a clean check, or say anything controversial at all.

Good job Oates. Way to promote your sport.

First they allowed the forward pass, then it was those newfangled curves on the sticks, goalkeepers wearing masks, and now this.  Where will it all end?!?

If you want to read what Joe Thornton would do if he scored four goals in a game, read on, some may consider it cruel or vulgar language.
