About Yesterday's Trade Deadline Day

The Western Conference isn't a two-horse race between the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings.

Instead, trade deadline day showed the Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks are ready to challenge for the Western Conference title and for the Stanley Cup. The Stars acquired defenceman Kris Russell from the Calgary Flames, while the Ducks got winger Jamie McGinn from the Buffalo Sabres and winger Brandon Pirri from the Florida Panthers in preparation for the playoffs.

Dallas gave up defenceman Jyrki Jokipakka, a conditional second-round pick and a prospect but got better in the West by picking up Russell.

"Our focus was on the back end, seeing what was out there," general manager Jim Nill said on a conference call. "It gives (coach Lindy Ruff) lots of different options. Kris can play high minutes. ... He's got great endurance."...

If a hockey trade is made in the forest and it is blocked by a no-trade clause, does it make a sound? What about if it doesn’t happen because of Saudi Arabia? In fairness, Saudi Arabia, whose oil policy has helped drive down the Canadian dollar and therefore the NHL salary cap, had a lot to do with it. If you were somehow wondering if OPEC cared about hockey, wonder no more.

If you’ve been enjoying the least interesting National Hockey League season in decades, Monday was for you. There were 19 trades, most of them late, but for name recognition, the majority that may as well have been trading a steakhouse dinner for a case of vodka. The biggest name was probably Calgary’s Kris Russell, who somehow fetched a conditional second-round pick from Dallas, defenceman Jyrki Jokipakka and a prospect despite being a possession black hole who dragged down nearly every Flame he played with. Nice job, Calgary.
