A Second Long Island Option

From the AP via NHL.com:

The New York Islanders may still get a new arena on Long Island, but in a different county.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says he welcomes the idea of the hockey team moving to the eastern end of the island that he represents, as long as it’s good for the team and for the community.

He said on Saturday he called team owner Charles Wang last week to talk about the idea.

That whole Nassau Coliseum area is an ugly joke right now.

This is what the locals think…

Uh, correct me if I’m wrong, but there *is* no arena in Suffolk County to even temporarily house the Islanders.  And they’re not going to be able to build one in a short enough timespan before the Nassau lease is up, no?

So why or how exactly is Suffolk County an “option”?

A stadium could be built in three years, but just as likely the Islanders continue to play at the Dilapidated Coliseum on a year-to-year basis. The County really couldn’t say no since they would essentially have no other tenant to support the venue.
