Between every whistle when Kevin Weekes is in net, the Rangers' goaltender will sweep his stick around the arc of the crease, then slap both his pads. He will alternate kicking each of his legs out to the side for several seconds, then touch the right post with his stick, followed by the left post with his catching glove. If players on the ice listen closely, they can also hear Weekes talk to himself: "Stay positive," he says. "Stay in the moment. Stay focused." To the long list of marginalized segments of society, be sure to include a group of athletes that is widely misunderstood, and often ridiculed. Decked in cumbersome pads and colorful masks, hockey goalies are derided as an eccentric breed, a group whose very existence is defined by a willingness to ignore a basic human impulse.more
