A Fair Suspension

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,

We’ll grudgingly give him the intent-to-injure part of the summation (although he really does hone in like a heat-seeking missile), but that doesn’t alter the fact that Kostopoulos propelled upwards, towards the head area, and caused serious damage.

It’s too bad he has to miss time just as he’s started to find a niche on this team. But it’s his own fault. And who’d you rather be for the next little while, him or Brad Stuart?

As for those perfectly fine with the manner in which the hit was delivered, well, imagine Mike Milbury reacting “in his day” to some chowderhead laying Rick Middleton out in similar fashion. Geez, they might still be brawling.

More to the point: Picture for a moment, say, Mark Giordano or Jay Bouwmeester down on all fours Friday night, raspberry jam oozing from the mouth and the remainder of his regular season lopped to nothing.

They’d be yowling for disembowelment, followed by the installation of the death penalty around here.

I’m not a Johnson fan but this time he gets it, and gets it right.

His last two paragraphs are something Flames fans have no answer or retort for whatsoever.  And that’s the point.

You’re talking about one of the Wings’ top 2 d-men (sorry Rafalski, you’ve stunk defensively this year), and at times their #1 even.

Can you imagine Leaf fans if this had been Phaneuf or Kaberle?  Hawk fans with Seabrook or Keith?

Sure, the National Hockey League’s all over the map when it comes to discipline, wildly erratic, and you can sit around and play the hard-done-by/what-about-that-other-incident? game into the early hours of next week, but that doesn’t change the evidence in this particular case.

Perfectly said. If you look at this situation in isolation, you have to be insane to think it doesn’t warrant a suspension. We can definitely argue whether he deserved 1 game or 10, but a suspension is inarguable.

The argument is really about the inconsistency. If you have a gripe about that, fair play, but that’s a separate issue, and to minimize what Kostopolous did to Stuart based on poor disciplinary measures of the past is unfair.

Kind of off topic, but I’ve been hearing a lot of pundits (like Milbury) say that these types of hits happened “all the time” Back in Their Day™ and that hockey is becoming sissified.

I’d suggest to anyone who is inclined to believe this to watch some classic hockey games on the NHL Network from, say, the 50s through the 70s.

There is remarkably little hitting going on, and the players look like midgets skating through oatmeal.

Sure, there were a lot more fights back then, but hockey in general is a more dangerous sport by a factor of about 10 these days, so can we please put this idiocy to rest?

targeting the head has largely been AFTER the introduction of helmets. It would seem like less helmets might mean less concussions, but the head injuries that happen from pucks and falls to the ice would be much much worse.

That’s alright, no one actually revels Milbury’s opinion but himself.  The guy likes to hear himself talk and he likes to look like a hardass.  Convenient for him now, I doubt he’d strap them on again and go out for one shift of a random game, see how great he feels, let alone take a hit like Stuey did.  Milbs is a douche canoe, I would go as far to say more so than Pierre o.O
