A Different Aaron Downey

from George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press,

Downey, 36, made some big changes in his life. He trimmed 15 pounds off his muscular frame.

“For me to be able to continue my career as a banger and energy guy, I had to re-create myself,” Downey said Tuesday at City Ice Arena in Detroit. “I had to rebuild the body, had to get faster and had to work on my game.”

More important, Downey worked to change his lifestyle, which he said he believes had an effect on his on-ice performance.

“I wasn’t happy,” said Downey, an unrestricted free agent who is trying out with the Red Wings. “I was happy with my career, but ... I had a lot of off-ice issues that no one’s really seen. I kept a lot of things hidden, and I faced them.

“I’m not about chasing women. I’m not about going to the bars anymore.”

I really, really hope Downey gets a two-way with Detroit… plays in Grand Rapids… and gets called up some when the Wings need it.  Nobody can EVER say the WIngs don’t have heart or will if he’s in the lineup.

And while his fighting is nice, it’s as an energy guy that I loved him in his first stint.  You have to love a guy that goes out for a 20-second shift and hits 4 guys during it.  That stuff makes a difference, especially at home when the crowd gets to buzzing…

Imagine having Maltby and Downey in GR, waiting for injuries or other needs to call up.  Talk about a luxury… and in the meantime they could help tear the AHL apart and maybe the Griffs can be a winner for once.

It’s a good culture here. There’s no ego here…

That just about sums up the Wings organ-I-zation from top to bottom.

I’m dedicated to training, skating, being a good person and getting my rest.

I love the “getting my rest” part. smile

Aaron’s a class act. Always was. But even more so now. And I hope he does get one more “kick at the can” – even if it’s not with Detroit.

I really liked Downey during his first stint. It seemed then that as the season went on his defensive skills improved. He still made some errors, but they were fewer and farther between. I’m rooting for the guy if only because I admire his determination to find and fix the issues with his game. And he really likes to lay into the opposing team smile
