A Bigger Bure

As much as Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee understood that 2004 No. 1 draft pick Alex Ovechkin would be a high-yield, long-term investment, he didn't fully appreciate what a significant short-term capital gain he would also become. McPhee was with the Vancouver Canucks when Pavel Bure arrived, and although Bure was smaller and less bullish, McPhee sees similarities in their crowd-pleasing abilities as a rookie. "Every time Pavel touched the puck there was an anticipation that something special was going to happen, and Alex is the same way," McPhee said. "He's bigger and stronger and at this point he's more rounded than Pavel, but they are both pure attack players."
