A Violent Style Of Play

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,
It's hard to know when the forces of evil kidnapped the Western Conference and held it for ransom in Jacques Lemaire's basement. The L.A. Kings Stanley Cup victory? Maybe. But, long before the Kings hoisted the chalice, the darkness had already taken hold in St. Louis, in Nashville, in Phoenix, in Minnesota.
The erosion of the Detroit Red Wings? That might have had more to do with it. When the Wings were winning, there was still the idea that you could have success with speed and skill. When they began to deteriorate, it became easier to align yourself with Satan.
But, however it happened, make no mistake this is the world in which the Vancouver Canucks now find themselves in the West. It is a violent world. It's an unforgiving world. And the only way to have success in that world is to be as mean and ugly as the cloven-hooved opposition.

The two “schools” of hockey have a lot to do with which non-Wings teams I do and don’t like.
For instance, I don’t dislike Vancouver and Chicago as much as I dislike St. Louis and Anaheim, because the former two play the “Red Wings” style while the latter play the other.
All personal preference of course, but it’s funny to watch writers and fans in Vancouver picking up in turn things that followers of the Wings have been doing since 06-07.
Everybody hates you? - get in line, kiddos.
The Eastern-biased media doesn’t give you the coverage you deserve? - Yeah, we know how that works.
Less-exciting trap hockey annoys you? - Here’s your nametag, welcome to our support group.

It’s not the Red Wings’ fault. It’s the fact that Boston won playing rough-and-tumble hockey, and the fact that the Kings won the Cup after transitioning to Darryl Sutter’s “trap and rodeo on ice” hockey, which was much more effective as the obstruction crackdown went by the wayside last season.
