A Six-Year Extension For Zach Werenski

from the Columbus Blue Jackets,

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Zach Werenski to a six-year, $57.5 million contract extension through the 2027-28 National Hockey League season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced tonight.

Werenski, 24, has registered 65 goals and 124 assists for 189 points with 71 penalty minutes and a +13 plus/minus rating, while averaging 22:43 in time on ice in 335 career NHL games. Since making his debut with Columbus in 2016, he ranks tied for third among NHL blueliners in goals and 19th in points. He is the club's all-time leader in goals by a defenseman, while ranking second in points and fourth in assists.

"Zach Werenski has been one of the top defensemen in the National Hockey League over the past five years and we are thrilled that he will continue to be a Blue Jacket and the leader of our blueline for at least the next seven years," said Kekalainen. "As talented as Zach is and as much as he has achieved so early in his career, he is an even better person and will be a foundational player for our club as we move forward."

CBJ definitely overpaid to keep him.

Don’t get me wrong. He’s a good player. He’s just not a $9.583 million dollar AAV player.

That’s way too much money but nobody wants to play in Columbus.

Good for him. Definitely had to overpay to keep him around but also Jarmo has done a good job this summer retooling the roster and hit and absolute home run in the Jones trade. I think that helped a bit in getting him signed longer term instead of another bridge deal

Good for Zack! Great guy, great family.

I would love to see him in a Wings uniform but at that price…..wow!

I really do not understand what these teams are doing. Ovie is worth his new contract but Washington, Toronto and many other teams are so capped hamstrung due to these crazy contracts. I know it’s about getting butts in the seats but isn’t the point winning the Stanley Cup?

CBJ has no choice but to overpay right now.

It is nice to see BJs actually keep someone, and it sounds like Laine is going to be there for a bit too. It’s an overpayment, but that’s what it takes to keep people there.

I actually had a job offer in Ohio a few years ago and also asked for a good bit more to compensate me for the misery of living in that state. I did not end up there, thankfully.
