A Six-Year Contract Foe Nick Bjugstad In Florida

from the Florida Panthers,

Florida Panthers Executive Vice-President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a six-year contract with F Nick Bjugstad.

“We are very pleased to have agreed to a long-term contract with Nick,” said Tallon. “He is a big, strong and skilled forward who will play an important role on our club for the next several seasons. Nick, along with Aleksander Barkov, Aaron Ekblad, Erik Gudbranson and Johnathan Huberdeau are all part of our club’s growing nucleus of young and talented players that will lead our team to future success.”

Bjugstad, 22, currently leads the Panthers in goals (13), points (21), shots (94) and game-winning goals (3). He has recorded four multiple-point games this season, including a career best four points (2-2—4) on Nov. 16 at Anaheim. He has posted two four-game point scoring streaks this season and netted Florida’s game-winning goal in a NHL record 20-round shootout on Dec. 16.

Well, at least his contract starts as a 22 yr old compared to Johan Franzen’s who is 35 now with many years left on his gross contract.
Neither of these players will have a 60 pt+ season in the NHL. Their agents must be happy.

Nick Bjugstad in his second year is starting to dominate games. Last year in his rookie season I was surprised he wasn’t sent down to the AHL but each game he got better than the last game he played and by middle of the season was easily Panthers best player. This season he continued where he left off last year and has had gotten even better. Nick Bjugstad reminds me of a young Joe Thorton, big, talented and dominating, he will be a star in the this league for many years. Panthers know they have a future star and are willing to lock him up for the next several years. Dale Tallon’s draft picks are only now starting to show their greatness. In a few years Panthers will be a very tough team to play against. This has been a long time coming and I am still trying to get the bad taste out of my mouth from the Mike Keenan and Jacques Martin eras. (Spits on ground.)
