Kukla's Korner Hockey

A Look At Viktor Fasth

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

He laughs when asked if he ever played for Sweden in the world junior when he was a teenager.

“No, I was not that good,” he said.

When asked if Henrik Lundqvist was a role model, he says yes, of course, but “We are the same age. When he started in the NHL, I think I was in the third division in Sweden. Seems like a long way here for me.

“Yeah, of course, I thought of quitting but I love hockey.”

Fasth is the poster boy for late-bloomers. He’s also under-sized by NHL standards at six feet and 192 pounds, when there’s an army of guys six-foot-four and up.

He’s also as good as Jonas Hiller, the Ducks’ long-time No. 1 goalie. Hiller, who may be more acrobatic, could start in the playoffs, but he might have a short leash. Fasth, who is very technical, is that good.
