A Few Hockey Notes In August

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- If there was a steroids scandal in hockey and almost all who tested positive were French Canadian, or American, or Russian or any single group, how much would be made of that? Why then has so little been made of the fact the 12 suspensions announced in baseball this week were all hispanics?

- Watched some of the Leafs-Bruins series the other night was left with one startling impression: James Reimer made many remarkable saves and then let in some terrible goals. It was brilliance one moment, bad rebound or bad goal the next. The goaltending battle at training camp between Jonathan Bernier and Reimer will be the main event of the pre-season for the Leafs.

- What did the Pittsburgh Penguins lack more than anything else the past few playoff seasons? OK, sound goaltending, I know. But what else did they lack? Defensive structure. That’s why the hiring of Jacques Martin as an assistant coach is important. Aside from being able to bore people in both of Canada’s official languages, he is a coach who understands and can teach structure.

Anyone who doesn’t think there are PEDs in hockey are fooling themselves.
Same with the NFL.

I still find it hard to believe that Erik Karlsson could return so quickly from such a bad injury (it took Selanne 6 months to recover, while Karlsson took 10 weeks.
Same goes for Ray Lewis who should have been out for a full year considering the previous 2 NFLers who had the same injury were out for 12 months.

At least baseball and it’s union have (finally) decided to clean up the sport.

I highly doubt the NHL would want all PEDs out of the game though.
They need HGH and other PEDs to help with the daily grind and wear and tear necessary to get through an 82 game season where the average game looks like rugby on ice.

Because unlike the writer, most people aren’t dopes and they understand that a sweep of a single distributor located in… Miami… is going to catch people who are mostly or entirely of a southern hemisphere descent to one degree or another.  Maybe if the next PED Distributor is in Jersey they’ll get a different constellation of ethnicities, ya think Steve-o?

Although, because that much dumb is just too hard to resist enjoying for a moment, I’m sure people from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Venezuela get a huge kick out of being labeled ‘hispanic’.  It’s Latino, Simmons.  The word you’re looking for is ‘Latino’.

Oh yeah, and Ryan Braun… who’s bleeping Jewish.  But other than the Jewish guy and the Latino guy… yeah, wow, a lot of Hispanics.

Someone do that trick again where they get behind Simmons with a bright flashlight and when they turn it on, his body disappears.

Well, let me clarify soomething for you Mr. Know It All. Let’s start with the definitions of “Hispanic” and “Latino.”

Hispanic |hiˈspanik| adjective
Of or relating to Spain or to Spanish-speaking countries, esp. those of Latin America.

Latino |ləˈtēnō; la-| noun ( pl. -nos)
a Latin American inhabitant of the United States.

So, to simplify it for you, all Latinos are Hispanics. But not all Hispanics are Latinos.

If you knew as much as you think you do, HD, you’d be a genius. But you’re more like half a genius – smart sometimes but just plain old (to use your word) dumb the rest of the time.

Why are so many in the media up north, so focused on nationality? It is like some parallel universe where old bias’ and prejudices still exist.

because that would be considered racial profiling which is a politically incorrect practice and might offend somebody with delicate senses; and probably just coincidence in this instance.

Really?

You read this site regularly an you’re going to pretend that it’s only those “up North” who are obsessed with nationality?

And you’re going to pretend that “old biases and prejudices” don’t exist south of Canada.

What a *#$%@& joke!

There are of course PEDs in hockey. Not nearly as much as in football (talk about a massive, massive joke), nor baseball, let alone cycling, weightlifting, t&f, boxing, swimming…

IMO there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to mention Karlsson (regardless of your thoughts on libel); recovery from achilles injuries can vary greatly depending on a number of factors, not the least of which is age. Growth is not a panacea by any means, and is one of the most misunderstood and overblown substances in the recent history of medicine & PEDs. It has its uses - and its downsides, such as high systemic IGF - but its effect is modest at best. There are other far more nuanced, sophisticated, and occasionally even sports-legal, regimes to aid in healing, let alone to achieve anti-catabolic benefits.

In hockey, a lot of the use comes with younger guys trying to break into the league (medium skilled juniors trying to be drafted on the basis of size, skilled guys putting on weight in the minors / over the summer under these fantastic training programs “added 8lbs and dropped BF 4%!”), and with brawlers. Not all, but most, at least from what I’ve seen and heard. Ofc one would have to assume that older players are also indulging for similar reasons.

Great comment. You are right on the money. This is a subject that has been discussed many times in my house. The NHL is complicit by ignoring the use of these drugs.

I’m not saying PEDs aren’t being used, but there is a difference in the recovery time from any injury in 2013 compared to 1993 (when Selanne had his achilles injured).  The surgical procedures are not even comparable at this point. Further; just because both were lacerations of the achilles doesn’t mean they were the same severity.

There is so much wrong with the “Hispanics” stuff. The only people that make a comment like that in 2013 are people that are either racist or are trolls. Simple as that. To imply that a Latino player is more likely to do something like this strictly because they are Latino is the exact definition of racism. If Simmons didn’t mean it like this, then there was no other reason for him to post the comment, other than to troll folks and manufacture a controversy in a boring off-season.

Given his track record, I’m inclined to actually believe that this is trolling. But honestly, what the hell…
