from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
- Martin Brodeur wants to come back for another season with the Devils and he’s certainly entitled as the winningest goalie of all-time. But an alarm bell should be going off in GM Lou Lamoriello’s office. Brodeur’s goals-against average (2.22) was good, but not his save percentage at .901. That’s barely adequate in today’s NHL where .920 is expected for most starters. Which NHL goalie is Lamoriello going to sign as a UFA after next season because there is nobody ready in the New Jersey system?
- I don’t see the St. Louis Blues having enough money to sign UFA centre/winger Andy McDonald. Wonder if the Anaheim Ducks, who dealt McDonald to the Blues for Doug Weight in 2007, would bring him back as a No. 2 centre? McDonald, with his $4.2 million salary this year, turns 36 in August, but he still has wheels. The Blues, who never spend anywhere near the cap ceiling, have to re-up Alex Pietrangelo, Chris Stewart, Kevin Shattenkirk and Patrik Berglund, who are all restricted free agents.
- Ray Emery’s health issues make him a risky UFA signing this summer, certainly at a tidy price. The jury’s out on whether the Blackhawks backup can be a 55-60 game goalie after his hip surgery. The betting is he re-signs with the Blackhawks for about $1.75 million, a bump of $600,000 a season.
