A Drastic House Cleaning

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,.

The word coming from Camp Pegula offered this frightening possibility: Regier surviving the season. Ken Sawyer, one of Pegula’s top advisors, has told people he believes Regier is a “hockey genius.” It’s enough to question Sawyer’s credibility, especially after Regier signed a contract extension for missing the playoffs.

At some point, usually when their bank accounts are full but dreams are unfulfilled, players start searching for a title anywhere they can find one. Miller, Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville each have one full season on their contracts before they’re eligible for unrestricted free agency.

Miller will turn 33 this summer. Pominville turns 31 in November while Vanek turns 30 next January. They’re not the innocent, energetic kids who emerged during the 2005-06 season and climbed aboard a playoff ride to remember. All three have been superb in a miserable season. All three could help a playoff team.

It would be painful, but the Sabres should consider trading them in a lost season and maximize their return. It beats losing them for nothing or getting less back next season. For now, they remain valuable assets.

If Camp Pegula (nice but not Hockey Smart) wants to trade Stafford I hope KH has got his number.  Too bad we don’t have a Leino to offer, hmm wait we might have someone close!

I’m not sure what you think you would be getting in Stafford to make you think it would be good to have him, but trading a Leino for a Stafford is a lot like trading a duck for a duck, except one of those ducks actually shows up in the playoffs and one doesn’t.

Stafford has had pretty good numbers before this year, not Leino like. Better than Fils, etc.  And he actually shoots the puck, Right Hand Shot, younger than Fil,  Signed thru 2015 at $4M Cap Hit, Buffalo shopping him, why not look???

Just one idea… Buffalo has made some dumb trades

Wings getting a top 6 forward and/or top 2 D man might be tough, IMO

Sounds exactly like our own big, inconsistent scoring winger who takes shifts off and disappears for stretches…

How mnay of those do we want?

Buffalo has maybe made some dumb FA signings (okay, one in recent times, Leino, and that was for his post season play, something he hasn’t gotten to do there yet). Their trades have not been dumb. They got a first for trading Guastad at the deadline. A first! Picking up Hodgson for Kassian looks to be a pretty decent trade so far. Sulzer for Gragnanni? Not bad. How about Regehr for Butler? Bucky Gleason hates Regier so he makes him sound like he is incompetent but really he isn’t.

He won’t trade Stafford without getting good payment back (he tends to overvalue his players).

Vanek and Datsyuk would be a brilliant pairing. Buffalo would be as likely to let him go as the wings would be to get rid of Zetterberg, but I can dream.

Don’t be ridiculous.  Ken Holland already has so many top six forwards that he’s had to demote two of them to the third line!
