3ICE, An Aptly Named League

from Chris Bumbace of USA TODAY,

A few years ago at Pittsburgh Penguins rookie camp, E.J. Johnston observed the delight among a couple thousand fans as they watched a tournament of 3-on-3 contests.

"It was electric," Johnston recalled. "It was end-to-end action. It was all the creativity, and goal-scoring and tic-tac-toe passing that hockey fans love."...

Johnston is now the CEO and founder of "3ICE," a new 3-on-3 hockey league set to debut next year across North America, with several big-name coaches (six of them Hockey Hall of Famers) serving as the coaches of the eight inaugural teams. Craig Patrick, the assistant to Herb Brooks on the 1980 U.S. men's Olympic gold squad, is the league's commissioner....

The eight coaches are: six-time Stanley Cup winner Bryan Trottier; three-time champion Guy Carbonneau; five-time All-Star John LeClair; four-time Olympian Angela Ruggiero; four-time Stanley Cup winner Larry Murphy; three-time champion Joe Mullen; and Ed Johnston. Johnston and LeClair are the only members of the group not selected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

If they can get Larry mic’d up during the game, along with a hot dog vendor somewhere within eye sight of the guy, I’ll watch for sure.

Pretty close to what I was going to post which was: I wonder if they’re paying Murph in hot dogs.

The poor guy carved out a reputation for himself that almost eclipses what he did in hockey.

I’m guessing the only reason FSND let him go the first time around was because his boss was a vegan.

What’s the best way to get back at a vegan who tells you repeatedly they are a vegan?  You talk about hot dogs all night long during the hockey broadcast.  wink

Yup, I can see it, I’d watch.  Definitely will be a young man’s game .  It will fill the void of undrafted young men, could be used to develop skills for future draft, could be a good source for the supply of unsigned goalies.  I’m not saying that contracts will be rich but if they get into a thirsty market Canada and big US markets and get a TV contract they could become a big show.  It may hurt leagues like the ECHL but could be replacement league based in those cities.
