3000 Days Of The Shootout

12/20/2013 at 5:23pm EST

On Sunday, the NHL shootout will be 3,000 days old, roughly 2,949 days past its best-before date, and despite our worst fears it probably will be around for the next 3,000 as well....

One problem with the shootout is that, to borrow a term from Mike Milbury, is its contribution to the sissification of hockey.

The shootout’s evolution through these 3,000 days is alarming, sometimes bordering on figure skating.

Instead of treating it like a breakaway, players have taken to dipsy-doodling their way toward the net, pausing briefly for a triple axel before eventually shooting the darn puck.

Soon, they’ll be taking a break between overtime and the shootout to apply makeup.

The biggest problem with the shootout, though, is how it affects the standings and, potentially, playoff rankings.
