BY THE NUMBERS: 2017 YEAR IN REVIEW
A total of 7,307 goals were scored across 1,273 regular-season NHL games during the 2017 calendar year (including 97 shootout-deciding goals). A look at various statistics leaders from the past 12 months:

* Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov (52-54—106 in 81 GP) led the League in both goals and points in 2017, edging Oilers captain Connor McDavid (30-72—102 in 83 GP) – the only other player to reach the 100-point plateau. McDavid’s 72 assists were the most by any player in the calendar year.

* Kucherov (1.31) and McDavid (1.23) were among 11 different players who averaged at least one point per game in 2017. Two others collected at least 1.20 P/GP: Lightning forward Steven Stamkos (1.29; 17-32—49 in 38 GP) and Bruins forward Brad Marchand (1.23; 44-42—86 in 70 GP).

* Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman (13-55—68 in 79 GP) was one of four defensemen with at least 60 points in 2017, leading all blueliners in assists and points. San Jose’s Brent Burns (20-46—66 in 81 GP), the reigning Norris Trophy winner, paced all defensemen in goals.

* Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby (49) led the League in wins, 11 more than the next-closest netminders.Sergei Bobrovsky of the Blue Jackets had an NHL-best eight shutouts, while JohnGibson (.930 SV%) of the Ducks and Jonathan Quick (2.26 GAA) of the Kings paced all goaltenders in save percentage and goals-against average, respectively (min. 30 GP).

* The 2017 calendar year began with the Blue Jackets in the midst of a win streak that extended to 16 games – one shy of the NHL record – and ended with the expansion Golden Knights extending their win and point streaks to seven and 12 games (11-0-1), respectively – the longest such runs by an NHL team in its inaugural season.

* The two-time reigning Presidents’ Trophy-winning Capitals ended the Blue Jackets’ win streak last January and went on to lead the League in wins (58), points (122) and goals for (289) in regular-season games in 2017:
