Kukla's Korner Hockey

The three cities hoping to host the 2014 Winter Games have completed their final bids and all will be handed over to the International Olympic Committee by Wednesday’s deadline.
Pyeongchang, South Korea; Salzburg, Austria; and Sochi, Russia, have until Wednesday to ensure their “candidature files” are given to the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland. Sochi submitted its bid Monday, with Pyeongchang expected to follow Tuesday. Salzburg’s bid will be handed over on Wednesday
There’s no way the NHL or PA will sign off on any of those cities, regrettably.
The time and distance involved in getting to Soichi would make Nagano look like flying to London—anybody want layovers in Frankfurt and Moscow? Sochi’s also 8 hours ahead of Eastern Standard time, so games would be airing at noon or earlier. Pyeongchang County‘s fourteen hours ahead of EST and involves another trans-oceanic flight and stopover in Tokyo.
Salzburg’s easy access from Frankfurt would get the nod—if players like Sami Salo and Dominik Hasek didn’t suffer injuries in Torino, anyway. Between the TV ratings of non-North-American Olympic hockey games (the NHL’s concern) and the inevitability of long-term injuries in high-level tournaments (GM’s concerns), the NHL will make its Olympic curtain call in Vancouver in 2010.
