Don Cherry On His Firing

from Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun,

Don Cherry says he has been fired from Hockey Night in Canada by Sportsnet.

And the legendary star of Coach’s Corner says he will not walk back what he said on Saturday.

“I have just learned I’ve been fired by Sportsnet for comments made on Coach’s Corner Nov. 9,” Cherry told me in a phone interview. “No problem.”

Cherry added: “I know what I said and I meant it. Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers.”

And Cherry said his words were not racial or bigoted but patriotic and respectful of our troops.

HNIC And The Leafs

from Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette,

Obviously, the column on Hockey Night in Canada and its slavish devotion to the Toronto Maple Leafs had struck a nerve. And while at least half the letters were from fans of the Canadiens, there were substantial responses from another Canadian NHL cities, especially Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver.

The verdict? People outside Toronto are mad as hell. They have no choice but to go on taking it from Rogers, Sportsnet, Hockey Night in Canada and (to a lesser extent) TSN — but they aren’t happy about it.

Hockey Night in Canada, it’s clear, has become one of the things that divide us.

Of the letters I received, 95 per cent were positive. Without exception, the negative letters came from Leaf fans, divided equally between attempts at an articulate defence of the HNIC approach and the inevitable “your a idiot” letters from charter members of Ford Nation.

The conclusion? Fans across the country are very angry with HNIC and they have three main complaints:

First, viewers across the country hate the Maple Leafs 24/7 approach in which the Leafs can do no wrong, even when (see Auston Matthews) they pretty clearly have done wrong. It’s not only Montreal — if anything, fans in Edmonton and Vancouver seem even more disenchanted with HNIC.

The Changes At Sportsnet

from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star,

Bob Cole, Bob McCown, Nick Kypreos, John Shannon and more.

There’s an impressive list of sports broadcasters who are not broadcasting sports at the moment after massive changes at Sportsnet, which has reached the halfway point of a 12-year, $5.2-billion deal for national rights to the NHL.

Asked recently about the moves — with the hockey and radio ratings seasons now underway — new Sportsnet president Bart Yabsley made no apologies.

“You know, I’d rather focus on the future,” said Yabsley, the successor to Scott Moore, who stepped down a year ago. “Those guys are quality people, good broadcasters and true pros. That’s about all I want to say about those guys.”

Scott Moore, president of Sportsnet and NHL properties, has resigned from Rogers Communications Inc.

According to company sources, Moore had recently begun discussing his departure from the company. He felt Sportsnet’s hockey ratings were in good shape now that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets are serious contenders and wanted to explore new challenges.
