Guest writer Erin Nicks is covering the NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner this weekend.
By Erin Nicks
Those concerned about Ottawa picking up some grit in this year’s draft will need to dig deep into Round 5, when the club (after much apparent hemming and hawing) selected defenceman Mark Borowiecki with the 139th pick.

Beach Ready To Move On

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
We watched pretty closely and we’re almost positive that when Kyle Beach walked up to the podium shortly before 9 p.m. and pulled on a Chicago Blackhawks jersey, there were no horns sticking out of his head. Neither was there a pointy tail dragging behind him.
Not that you wouldn’t have fully expected to see either the way the 18-year-old from Kelowna, British Columbia, has been demonized in the weeks leading up to the draft. In an interview a few hours before he became the 11th overall selection in the 2008 draft, Beach admitted that in all of the 28 interviews he had, teams were much more interested in his head space than his foot speed.

Career Comes To A Sudden Stop

from the Anchorage Daily News,
As a coveted young defenseman with pro potential, David Carle enhanced his burgeoning talent with poise and maturity beyond his years. Now, the 18-year-old from Anchorage is leaning on those same virtues to deal with the end of his hockey career.
Carle on Friday said he will no longer play the game after doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., diagnosed a heart condition that puts him at risk for sudden cardiac death if he exerts himself too strenuously.

OHL Dominates Round 1

from NHL.com,
On the first day of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the O came first, before the Q and the W—and we’re not just talking alphabetically.
Seven of the top 10 selections in Friday’s first round skated in the Ontario Hockey League last season, and in all, 11 of the 30 players selected in the first round came out of the OHL.
By comparison, nine skaters came from the Western Hockey League, including four straight from picks from No. 11 to No. 14. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League brought up the rear, as it did not have a single player selected in the first round.
continued and many more NHL bits from Friday night…

Keep The Draft In Canada

from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,
Forget all that (though the Internet problems were so bad, league reps came by at the end of the night and apologized), Friday night’s draft reminds that this event should always be held in Canada. No offense to Raleigh or Columbus or Nashville, all cities that recently had the draft, there’s no comparison. Where in Raleigh there were mostly crickets in the seats, In Ottawa, the building was full of fans who just came to watch and cheer and boo.
When the Senators were introduced during the pre-draft role call, the place went wild and chanted Go Sens Go.
In defense of Columbus, the crowd was electric last year and very vocal too.

Trades Hightlight Day 1 Of 2008 NHL Draft

from TSN,
The 2008 NHL Entry Draft kicked off in Ottawa with a flurry of big trades on Friday night, and the Calgary Flames led the way early with two major deals.
The first move saw general manager Darryl Sutter acquire forward Mike Cammalleri from the Los Angeles Kings in a three-team deal that also involved the Anaheim Ducks. Calgary sent its 17th overall pick to the Kings for Cammalleri, and the Kings then shipped that pick and the 28th overall selection to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for the Ducks’ 12th overall draft pick.

Guest writers Erin Nicks and Patrick Williams are covering the NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner this weekend. This post will be updated with random news through the evening. Original post-time is 5:26pm. All times EST. Updates will be time-stamped and added below.
5:26pm—Erin: Zach Bogosian, on his travels to Ottawa and the surrounding areas to train…
“I’ve been coming up here 4-5 days a week – it’s pretty bad on gas, but it’s worked for me for the past couple of years. Obviously (fitness guru) Lorne Goldenberg has trained some great players like Gary Roberts and Cory Stillman – he helps me out a lot. That’s one of the main reasons why I’ve succeeded over the past few years – he made my body ready for the rigours of the NHL.”
