Arizona Coyotes/Chicago Blackhawks Trade Last Night

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Arizona Coyotes President of Hockey Operations and General Manager John Chayka announced tonight that the Coyotes have acquired center Nick Schmaltz from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Brendan Perlini and center Dylan Strome.

"Nick is a dynamic forward with top line potential," said Chayka. "We feel he can be a core player of our team now and into the future. He's a good complement to our evolving forward group and a rare combination of speed, skill and creativity."

The 22-year-old Schmaltz has registered 2-9-11 and six penalty minutes (PIM) in 23 games with the Blackhawks this season.

The 6-foot, 177-pound native of Madison, WI has recorded 29-62-91 and 30 PIM in 162 career NHL games with Chicago. Last season, Schmaltz recorded 21-31-52 and 18 PIM in his second season in the NHL.

A Six-Year Extension For Jakob Chychrun In Arizona

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Arizona Coyotes President of Hockey Operations & General Manager John Chayka announced today that the Coyotes have signed defenseman Jakob Chychrun to a six-year contract extension. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are extremely pleased to sign Jakob to a six-year contract extension," said Chayka. "Jakob is a young, highly skilled defenseman with an incredibly bright future. The Latest On The Arizona Coyotes From Their CEO

from Matt Layman of ArizonaSports,

Following a report that the Coyotes would soon change ownership, the team has said that it is open to opportunities to improve its organization but would not say that any changes are imminent.

A report released Tuesday by The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta indicated that ownership change was on the way in Arizona, and that Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway was close to striking a deal to sell some of his ownership of the Coyotes to one or multiple parties. In March, 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station already reported that Barroway was exploring potential partnerships for his ownership of the franchise and was in discussions with other investors.

“As it is every day, our team’s focus is on the ice and on doing everything possible to grow the game of hockey in Arizona,” team president and CEO Ahron Cohen said in a statement. “While we aren’t going to discuss every unsubstantiated story on the Internet, here’s what I can say: we have been — and will continue to be — open to investment opportunities that will help us achieve our long-term goals in Arizona.”

The Arizona Coyotes Are Improving Under John Chayka’s Direction

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

In his short time in charge, Chayka has traded for goalies Antti Raanta and Darcy Kuemper; forwards Derek Stepan, Alex Galchenyuk, Richard Panik and Vinnie Hinostroza; and defensemen Niklas Hjalmarsson, Alex Goligoski, Jason Demers and Jordan Oesterle.

“We’ve made a lot of moves, and now they are accumulating to mean something,” Chayka said.

He also drafted forward Clayton Keller and extended defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson on an eight-year, $66 million contract when many in the media were predicting Ekman-Larsson would leave as a free agent after this season.

"It was rewarding (that Ekman-Larsson stayed),” Chayka said. “He could have signed with 30 other teams and gotten as much money, if not more. He had leverage. …The fact he was willing to sign here long-term was a big vote of confidence for our ownership, myself, the coaching staff. It validated a lot of things we are trying to do.”

What the Coyotes are trying to do is ignite a fan base by qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Winning Streak Hits Five For The Arizona Coyotes

from Richard Morin of azcentral,

For the third straight game, the Coyotes scored three goals in the first period to take a lofty lead in the early going. If their recent pattern were to repeat itself, they were well on their way to another rout at Gila River Arena.

But the Carolina Hurricanes didn’t allow the Coyotes to follow that script on Friday. They decidedly outplayed Arizona in the second period and managed to tie the game in the third. If it wasn’t for a stellar performance from Antti Raanta and an overtime winner by Michael Grabner, the Coyotes might have suffered a gut-wrenching loss.

While there are certainly several negatives to unpack from Friday’s game — a contest in which the Coyotes (7-5-0) escaped with a 4-3 win, extending their win streak to an NHL-best five games — the game more appropriately served as a testament to the team’s newfound mental toughness.

Christian Dvorak Had Surgery Today To Repair A Torn Pectoral Muscle

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - Arizona Coyotes President of Hockey Operations and General Manager John Chayka announced today that center Christian Dvorak will be out of the lineup indefinitely after undergoing successful surgery today in Phoenix to repair a torn pectoral muscle.

Dvorak suffered the injury last week in Glendale during a rehab skate for an unrelated injury.

"Christian was making good progress when he injured his pectoral muscle during practice," said Chayka. "It's unfortunate and unlucky, but the surgery went well today and we expect him to make a full recovery."

The Arizona Coyotes Have Made Changes, Will They Work?

from Richard Morin of azcentral,

This year, for the first time since becoming the youngest general manager in NHL history, John Chayka will begin to stand trial on a massive, three-year construction project inside the Arizona Coyotes organization.

Since joining the club in 2015 as a 25-year-old assistant GM in charge of analytics, the Coyotes have adopted a brand new coaching staff, a remade roster and a revitalized strategy from both a business and a hockey standpoint.

To suggest the Coyotes have changed in the short time that Chayka has been with the organization would be an understatement. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is the only player who was on the team’s roster prior to Chayka’s arrival in Arizona just three years ago.

It’s now time to see whether those changes can allow the Coyotes to take an important step forward, or if the organization will remain mired in mediocrity. Bottom line: These are now Chayka’s Coyotes, for better or worse.
