Stars Remain Desperate

from the CP via TSN,

“We feel good,’’ said captain Brenden Morrow, who scored the winning goal on a power play just 1:04 after Vancouver was called for too many men on the ice.
‘‘We’re going to try to not get too high. We tried not to get too low after being down 3-1. I think we have to play with a lot of emotion. We have to stay disciplined and keep our emotion in check and turn our energy into positive energy.’‘
Stu Barnes said the Stars can’t lose the desperation they showed to force a sixth game.
‘‘Anytime you have your back against the wall, and the other team has three wins, you’re desperate and you have to go out and play your best,’’ he said. ‘‘Hopefully we can do it again in Game 6.’‘

Roberto Luongo Playoff Leader with .950

From Ben Kuzma of The Province,

The Canucks workhorse has seldom given up rebounds, let alone goals in a tight quarterfinal series with the Dallas Stars.
“They [Stars] probably have doubts and it plays in their heads, that’s for sure,” Burrows said Wednesday. “You could even see last game that they were trying back-door plays to try and get an easy goal.”
Luongo leads all playoff goalies with a .950 saves percentage and is second with a 1.49 goals-against average. Another strong outing tonight will propel the Canucks into the second round for the first time in four years and launch a campaign to have a street named after Luongo.

Canucks Know How 3-1 Series Leads Vanish

From AP via MSNBC,

The Vancouver Canucks know firsthand just how precarious their lead over the Dallas Stars might be.
In NHL playoff history, 210 teams have gone up 3-1 in a best-of-seven series. Only 20 of those teams have gone on to lose the series. Vancouver has been involved in four of those series, including twice in 2003, when they overcame flu-ridden St. Louis in the first round, then blew the big lead against Minnesota.
The Canucks know not to do any premature planning for the second round as their Western Conference quarterfinal series with the Stars shifts back to Vancouver for Game 5 Thursday night.

1988 Draft Picks: Canucks and Stars

From the Dallas News,

Mike Modano’s frustration grows at the same rate as the Vancouver Canucks’ lead in this first-round series that appears to be almost over.
The Stars lost a 2-1 game to the Canucks on Tuesday to let Vancouver fly home with a 3-1 lead in the series.
The winning goal came off the stick of Trevor Linden, the second pick of the 1988 draft. That’s worth noting only because Modano, the first pick that year, didn’t register a single shot on goal in more than 24 minutes.

Bumping Roberto

from the Dallas Morning News,

Coach Alain Vigneault said Vancouver notified the NHL about the Stars bumping Luongo after the first two games in Vancouver.
“Obviously, all teams tell their players to go hard to the net, put traffic in front of the goaltender and to drive hard,” Vigneault said Monday. “Louie got hit twice there and once almost got hurt. The league is aware of it.
“Roberto doesn’t embellish anything whereas other goaltenders really do embellish,” Vigneault continued. “It’s tough for the referees to see everything going on out there, but obviously, he has been getting bumped. We need him to stay healthy.”

Ice Debate

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

Wait till Game 3 in Dallas!
Tomorrow, they’ll be following an afternoon NBA basketball game in the American Airlines Centre. And while game time is set for 8:30 p.m. central time, there’s wagering among Dallas scribes about what time the game between the Stars and Vancouver Canucks might actually start.
There’s great debate if they can take out the boards and get the building turned over in time to drop the puck on time and there’s absolutely no debate whatsoever about how brutal the ice is going to be.
“Horrendous,” said Daryl Reaugh, the former netminder who is the colour commentator on the Dallas broadcasts.

Back At It Tomorrow

from the AP via the Sporting News,

“If you win, you feel like you’re on top of the world. If you lose you feel like you’re never going to win another game,” said Mike Modano, whose Stars have now lost five straight overtime playoff games. “But you have to forget about that.”
With Game 2 starting at 6 p.m. in Vancouver on Friday night—less than 42 hours after Game 1 finally ended—there isn’t much time to dwell on the past. With players on both teams in need of intravenous fluids between overtime periods and after Wednesday’s marathon to stay hydrated, they’re happy to forget about it.

Longest Game in Canucks History

From TSN,

Henrik Sedin scored with 1:54 left in the fourth overtime period to give the Vancouver Canucks a 5-4 victory over the Dallas Stars Wednesday in a marathon opening game of the team’s NHL Western Conference first-round playoff series.
Sedin took a pass from behind the net from his brother Daniel and buried a shot behind Dallas goaltender Marty Turco.
The Canucks, who had blown a two-goal lead, flew off the bench to congratulate Sedin. The exhausted Stars crawled off the ice.
Dallas outshot Vancouver 76-56 in the game, which started at 7:11 p.m. local time and didn’t end until 12:35 a.m.

No Snoozing Allowed

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,

The hockey in the Vancouver Canucks-Dallas Stars playoff series will not be boring. This, evidently, is a vile canard perpetuated by media types and fans who don’t appreciate the finer points of tight-checking, low-scoring . . . ZZZZZZZZ . . . sorry, dozed off there for a moment just thinking about it.
Where were we? Ah yes . . . system-oriented, defence-first, technically precise, goal-free hockey.
Boring? It’s not boring. Alternatively entertaining, maybe. Excitementally challenged. Possibly. But boring? Hardly.

The Difference Maker

from the Vancouver Province,

Talk softly and carry a big stick. Players often preach that credo, but few put it into practice like Sami Salo.
As the owner of one of the NHL’s most feared slapshots—the Vancouver Canucks defenceman was ranked third in a Sports Illustrated players poll—Salo can make a difference in a chess-match playoff series with the Dallas Stars that may be settled by special-teams execution.
“They’re going to be hard-battle games and special teams are going to be crucial,” predicted Salo, who scored five of his 14 goals this season on the power play. “And they’re not going to be high-scoring because both teams have great goaltending and play their systems well.
